Mangaluru, Apr 6: The airlines operating from here have hiked air fares in a big way. This hike is applicable to almost all the segments served from here. The hike affected is 100 to 140 percent on an average.

Although there has been an increase in the passenger traffic operating from this airport over the years, of late, there has been a reduction in the number of aircrafts that are in operation due to several reasons.

The air fare to Mumbai which was around Rs 8,000 has gone up to Rs 20,000. One of the reasons for the shortage of aircrafts is said to be the grounding of Boeing 737 max 8 aircrafts after the recent air crash of such an aircraft operated by Ethiopian airlines at Addis Ababa. This has severely crippled the capacities of different companies including Jet Airways, SpiceJet etc. Till the government gives its clearance, these aircrafts will stay grounded.

The hike in the air fare began with Holi festival. It has reached crazy heights now. However, it has become a norm all over the world to reap benefits from seasonal rush of passengers, and offer discounts during the off season, and Indian companies cannot be an exception.
