Kundapur, Apr 8: A two-month-old baby of Shankar Naik from Ulimakki in Shiriyara village lost its life after the milk being fed to it obstructed its breathing. The child was already suffering from the problem of cough and phlegm.

As per the advice of the doctors, the mother's milk was being fed to the child with the help of a spoon, when the child started to struggle for breath after the milk got trapped in the windpipe. When the phlegm came out from the throat, the parents had removed it with their fingers. Immediately thereafter the child started to struggle for breath. It was taken to the community health centre at Brahmavar where the doctors said the baby was no more alive.

The child was facing the problem of being under weight when it was born. It was treated at Manipal hospital for a month. Two weeks back, it was discharged from the hospital and brought home. As per the advice of the doctors, medicine was prescribed for cough and phlegm.

A case about this death was filed in Kota police station.

So sad.I feel here everyone made failure.when baby was not drinking properly and had problems like cough, and phlegm, first duty was to findout what was the reason of cough, not a cough syrup.and feed the child with a ryles tube, since it had underweight.Never with spoon.may be baby had already some obstruction ,or some milk was already in the lungs,?and thatswhy coughing .when it was fed with spoon again due to cough must have gone in lungs and suffered breathlessness. They could have hold the child with legs up and head down so that child coughs out what it obstructed.and later give a light massage on the chest to breath ,Many times child vomits the milk and it goes to the lungs when not cared while breathing.Thatswhy it is important small babys not to keep on a pillow .Heartfelt sympathys to the family.
