Lok Sabha elections: NDA to win with slim majority, shows 'poll of polls'

New Delhi, Apr 9 (Reuters): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling alliance will win a thin majority in a general election that starts on Thursday, an average of four opinion polls showed, with a focus on national security appearing to trump concerns over jobs and farm prices.

The coalition led by Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to win 273 of the 543 parliament seats at stake, one more than the halfway mark required to rule. In the last election the alliance won more than 330 seats - the biggest mandate in three decades.

Most of the polling agencies that released surveys in the last four days said Modi got a boost from recent tension with arch enemy Pakistan after a militant group based there killed 40 Indian paramilitary troops in the disputed region of Kashmir in February.

“In today’s India we have seen perhaps for the first-time security issues competing with, and outdoing, a bread and butter issue like unemployment,” CVoter said in a statement.

“Primarily, the BJP has been unable to sufficiently distinguish itself from Congress when it comes to making people feel the difference in terms of their livelihoods and economic interests.

“However, when it comes to controlling and responding on terror the same set of respondents do feel a clear and visible difference.”

CVoter’s poll is the most conservative, predicting 267 seats for the ruling group, while the Times Now-VMR’s poll is the most bullish, with 279 seats.

The main opposition Congress and its allies are expected to more than double their seats to about 141 on average.

Pre-election opinion polls in India, with thousands of respondents, have proved unreliable several times in the past in a vast country of about 1.3 billion people, of whom about 900 million are eligible to vote.

Congress has accused the BJP of using retaliatory air strikes on Pakistan as a political tool and has instead highlighted job creation, tackling farm distress and empowerment of women, among its top priorities.

But the BJP has doubled down on national security issues, promising in its manifesto released on Monday to strip decades-old special rights from the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi has said he will retain power with a bigger mandate than before, while Congress says its plan for annual handouts of 72,000 rupees ($1,034) to the poorest families will help fuel its comeback.

The election will be held in seven phases and votes will be counted on May 23, with results likely to be clear the same day.

If the opinion polls are right NDA will head towards comfortable majority at around 300+ seats.

The below are some of the reasons:

    1. Opposition which is not yet able to capitalize on real issues like price rise, employment etc. will tend to fade still further as the campaign progresses because people who change their stand now onwards will be more towards sensitive issues like National security, social issues etc.

    2. Modi campaigning or Modi factor will effect at least 2% of voters which he has started now. This we have witnessed in Gujarat, MP, Rajasthan state elections where BJP was initially felt to be badly drubbed recovered fast in the fag end of campaign and gave a tough fight.

    3. BJP is better in planning and campaign and is used to be known for finishing fine. But it is other way round with the opposition parties. Karnataka state election is a good example.

    4. Leadership issue will haunt the opposition and people will fear to vote for opposition due to reason that it will result in an unstable government. It is almost certain considering the seats contested by Congress that Congress cannot head the Govt if opposition wins more seats. It will be more likely Mamata, Mayawati or DMK which will have high chances of heading the Govt if opposition wins. This will be decisive factor which an educated voter will consider when the election nears.

These issues will decide the outcome. Jhumlas will not fool the people anymore.

"This government has been a failure on all fronts and has inflicted pain and misery on the people through its reckless decisions of demonetisation and hasty imposition of a flawed GST, demonetization and GST disrupted the economy, trade and industry, led to closure of lakhs of factories and tens of millions of workers lost their jobs and livelihood. The unprecedented joblessness, agrarian crisis and distress of farmers and agricultural laborers are issues of grave national concern. The Modi government is guilty of monumental mismanagement of the Indian economy.

No accountability at all for corruption during the last five years. Corruption has become rampant across the country. After the next Govt is formed all the skeletons in the BJP vast array of hidden cupboards will be exposed including the Rafale Scam.

Modi Sarkar Ko Hatao. Desh Ko Bachao. They should be made accountable for over 100 deaths in ATM Ques after the Demoitisation.

I am Sorry Its a Wrong Place to write about Cow?

Some Comment Below about Cows Made me write this one,

I have noticed one thing People Who Eat Cow Meat are the one Who speaks against Cows,

And People who do not eat Cows are the one who speaks about protecting Cows? Strange Right?

I feel when they eat Cow their body becomes a portion of it, so they should be talking nice about it because it's your food, you can not rubbish about the food, your body is made of the food you eat.

Also, People are Mocking one group for Gow Mutra, but they can have the entire meat of that, WAW.

No Body Can Have Stool, and I am talking about Cow here not Chicken or Goat because that is not sacred for us. That does not mean I will talk rubbish about it no I am grateful for the sacrifices of the animal for my food.

For Hindus Cow is a Sacred Animal, We Worship that even the Cow Dung we use to apply for our outside house we call it Jaal, I have seen this being used in Christian Houses as Well, also people use cow dung to heat the water to take bath, I am sure many people have done that especially from DK and Udupi and not after coming outside might have forgotten the days, that's fine.

Also, Gow Mutra is very much sacred for us there is nothing shy about it, every person has their own beliefs these beliefs are being followed since ages in India before the invaders.

So my problem here is Our Own people are against these and try to mock the beliefs WHY????

    @ SP Shetty Dubai,
You have freedom to worship the cow and freedom to eat cow dung and drink its urine as holy.
At the same time for the dalits, christians and muslims consider it is not holy.
    We are eating cattle meat.
We are concerned about enforcing not to eat beef.
Citizens of India are concerned about forcing to eat and drink its shit l and its urine. Enjoy eating cow-dung and drinking cows urine.
Remember few days before in Gurgaum a Muslim was enforced to eat Pork by the fundamentals.

We Hindus Don't Drink Cow Dung As Source of Water, I never drank it indeed but I have heard it's being used in medicines, in Ayurveda it has its own medical benefits as well.

There is no Special Religion Called Dalit, Dalits are also Hindus as Us so don't worry even they do worship Cow and it's sacred for them also.

And Yeah if you want to Eat Cow Meat or Dung whatever you are Free to do, I have not right to tell you what to eat and what not to eat it is your wish, Buddy. But after eating the meat don't badmouth the poor Animal.

And I am against the Gurugram Incident, I Condemn the Incident.

    @SP Shetty, Dubai ,
Cows Shit is a waste from its eatables is not at all a use in medicinal nor it is holy.
It is a superstitious blind belief.
I did not said dalits are not Hindus.
For your info I have plenty of eye witness evidences of Dalits worship and eat the cow meat.
Eating of cow meat or animals meat is not a crime and a sin to Jews, Christians, Dalits and Muslims.
Before Buddhism came in to existence, Hindus were worshipping the cow and eating the sacrificial cow meat as holy.
All animals are poor's not only a cow.
I think nobody have forwarded the video glorifying forcing of pork meat to a Muslim. Condemning is not enough, should stand behind who ever forces to do so.

It cannot be a God. I am inspired from former S.C. justice Markandey Khatju.
Those who are thinking it is god, you have freedom to worship.
Similarly we have freedom to eat its meat.
Eating animals meat by the humans is not a outlaw and sin.
We have hope in destroying the cow government
And to preserve the Economy of India.
