Mangaluru, Apr 12: The third district and sessions court here, which has been designated as the Lokayukta special court, through a judgement delivered on Thursday April 11, sentenced retired assistant drugs controller of Dakshina Kannada district, Raveendra Shah, relating to an eight-year-old case of accepting bribe.

The then Lokayukta police inspector, Uday M Nayak, had raided a hotel at Thokkottu based on reliable information that Raveendra Shah was accepting bribe from the owner of a medical store there on July 16, 2011. During the raid, Raveendra was found to be in possession of Rs 49,000. This money was seized, the official was arrested, and a case was registered against him.

Judge of the Lokayukta special court, B Muralidhar Pai, who conducted hearing in the case, concluded that the charges leveled against the official have been proved. He therefore awarded sentence to the retired official on Thursday.

The then Lokayukta inspector, Dilip Kumar, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet in the court. Special public prosecutor, K S N Rajesh, had appeared for the prosecution.

The official has been handed over a year of simple imprisonment and fine of Rs 20,000 under section 7 of The Prevention of Corruption Act, and one year simple imprisonment and Rs 20,0000 fine for offences under section 13 (1) D of the act. If he fails to pay fine, the retired official will undergo simple imprisonment of three months additionally.
