Mangaluru: Man collecting cockles slips, drowns in river

Mangaluru, May 8: A man who was collecting cockles from River Falguni near the dam at Adyapady accidentally slipped, fell into the river, and drowned. The incident happened on Tuesday May 7.

The deceased has been identified as Shankar Poojary (49) resident of Edurupadavu, Moodushedde. He had collected cockles from the river, filled the same in his gunny bag, and was preparing to leave for home, when he suddenly slipped and fell into the river. As he did not know how to swim, Poojary could not save himself out of this situation.

Damodar, who was with Poojary at the time of the accident, conveyed information about this tragic incident to Bajpe police. The mortal remains of Shankar Poojary were later taken out of the river with help from the locals. After the postmortem, the body was handed over to the family.

Shankar Poojay has left behind wife and two children. A case of unnatural death was registered in Bajpe police station, and investigation is on.
