Udupi, May 12: International Day of the Midwife was celebrated on May 10, on the theme ‘Midwives: Defenders of Women’s Rights by postgraduate students (OBG nursing) and faculty members of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing MAHE Manipal.

The resource person for the awareness programme on women’s right was Mary Anne Ranjini Sreshta, advocate and public notary from Udupi. She highlighted on rights of women and shared her experiences and views related to various acts that benefits women and emphasized on vigilance towards sexual harassment at workplace. She also advocated many ways in which women can defend, protect themselves and stand up for their rights in the society.

Binita Sharma, Sowmya Naik, Annie Nirmala and Ritu Kumari postgraduate students also took sessions on ‘Standing orders of Obstetric drugs during the antenatal, intra-natal and post-natal period’ to 25 nurses and midwives working in Women and Child block of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

Hema Shankar II MSc OBG Nursing student compered the programme. The faculty co-ordinators were Dr Maria Pais and Dr Sushmitha Karkada, assistant professors, department of OBG Nursing, MCON MAHE, Manipal.
