Bantwal, May 12: When the traffic police were checking vehicles on national highway at B C Road on Saturday May 11 afternoon, Shariff (20) from Parlia in the taluk was injured after his motor bike hit an auto rickshaw.

Auto driver, Ivan Vincent D'Souza (43), escaped without any danger while passengers, Alice D'Souza (72) and another woman suffered minor nicks and cuts.

The traffic police led by sub-inspector, Manjunath, were conducting operation in front of Udaya Laundry where four-lane flyover ends. When the motor bike rider who did not wear a helmet came that way at high speed, the police tried to stop him. The bike rider hit an auto rickshaw that was ahead of him. He fell down and suffered grievous injuries to his head. Both the bike and auto rickshaw suffered damages. The injured was shifted to hospital by the police in their interceptor vehicle.

A huge crowd gathered there after the incident. Several of them were severely critical of the police for trying to stop the bike rider when he was moving at high speed. They blamed the cops for stopping vehicles at their whims and fancies. The crowd also drew support from the passengers of the auto rickshaw in question, and all of them together took the police to task

Later, town police station sub-inspector Chandrashekhar, arrived at the spot and dispersed the crowd.
