New Delhi, May 30: A week after the BJP-led NDA won the Lok Sabha elections with a massive mandate, Narendra Modi on Thursday May 30 took oath as Prime Minister for the second time at 7 pm.
President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy in Hindi to Modi and other ministers at a ceremony attended by thousands of people at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
More than 8,000 guests including international leaders were invited to swearing-in ceremony. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad and others were in attendance, while West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was absent.
The key inclusion in the cabinet is that of BJP president Amit Shah, called the 'Chanakya' of modern day Indian politics. He is most likely to be given the finance portfolio, which was earlier with Arun Jaitley, who had urged Modi to keep him out ot the ministry on health grounds.
In a major surprise, Sushma Swaraj, one of the senior-most leaders of the BJP, was among seven ministers of the previous council of ministers to be dropped.
The 67-year-old Swaraj who has held key positions in the party and its governments since decades was conspicuous by her absence in the new Cabinet.
Also missing in the new Council of Ministers were Suresh Prabhu, J P Nadda, Mahesh Sharma, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Jayant Sinha. Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha has been dropped from the Modi 2.0 cabinet. Anant Kumar Hegde from Karnataka who was minister of state for skill development was also dropped.
Although the reasons for Swaraj's omission were not immediately clear, the main reason possibly could be her ill-health.
As many as 20 members who took the oath are first-time ministers, including Suresh Angadi and Prahlad Joshi from Karnataka.
Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari and D V Sadananda Gowda occupied the first four seats next to that of Prime Minister Modi in the front row.
The ceremony was attended by heads of government and representatives from BIMSTEC countries, besides Prime Minister of Mauritius and President of Kyrgyzstan.
