Mangalore, Jun 16: The result o the election held for Panaje zilla panchayat (ZP) seat that had fallen vacant upon the death of ZP member Karunakar Pervody, went in favour of the BJP candidate and the wife of Karunakar, Triveni Karunakar Pervody. She scored over her nearest Congress rival N Shivappa Poojary by a margin of 1,895 votes. Various BJP leaders including MLA Mallika Prasad, taluk panchayat president Savitri Shivaram etc., congratulated the winning candidate immediately after the returning officer Y Shivaramaiah announced the result.

The Varambally taluk panchayat constituency too went to the BJP. Its candidate Nishan Rai scored a win over Dinkar Poojary of the Congress by a difference of 667 votes.  The seat was earlier with an independent candidate, Birti Suresh Shetty, a loyalist of Jayaparakash Hegde, who joined the Congress Party with his leader.  MLA Raghupati Bhat, Udupi municipal president Dinakar Shetty, leader Katpady Shankar Poojary and others took part in the victory procession. Both the Congress and the BJP had treated this as a prestigious constituency.
