Dubai: UAE to deport Indian worker held for stealing two mangoes

Dubai, Sep 24 (IANS): A United Arab Emirates (UAE) court has ordered the deportation of an Indian airport worker who was held for stealing two mangoes from the baggage of a passenger last year, a media report said.

The Court of First Instance on Monday ordered the 27-year-old Indian worker's deportation after paying a 5,000 dirham fine, for stealing the mangoes worth about 6 dirham on August 11, 2017, the Khaleej Times reported.

During interrogation and prosecution investigation, the accused recounted that he had been working at Terminal 3 of the Dubai airport. His duties included loading travellers' luggage onto the conveyer belt from the container and vice versa.

He confessed that on August 11, 2017, he stole the mangoes from a fruit box that was to be shipped to India as he was thirsty and looking for water.

In April 2018, the police summoned him and interrogated him about the incident. He was arrested and his place was searched. But no stolen items were found there.

A security officer said he saw the worker on a warehouse CCTV camera opening the travellers' luggage and stealing.

The accused has the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days.

Stealing food is not a sin or a crime. It is a basic necessity. His punishment if awarded should have been proportional to the crime, as in Paying for the food he has stolen. Not chopping off his hands as in olden days or paying a 5000Dh fine, which is the modern equivalent of chopping off his hands, as he will have to spend the rest of the year to pay the fine without eating or sending money to his family who are probably in a dire situation if he was working as a baggage attendant.

A reprimand would have been proper and some disciplinary action. This punishment is senseless. I was there in the Gulf for forty years plus; you be out there in 52 deg c and you can chew anything when you are thirsty. Appreciate the security alert; some human touch would do well.

The owner of the mangoes should request the judge to forgive him. He should be given a chance to change himself. why punish him in a harsh way and send him back.and he did admit that he robbed the mangoes. We all make make mistakes in like and nobody in the world is perfect. Please give him a light punishment but don't deport him.

Who are you to judge the life of others, but before you start pointing fingers, make sure you hands are clean. because each person knows only their own pain. When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.

Zomato Agent eating food of customer meant for delivery. We are lucky to born in india as no harsh law in india. We take wrong things lightly..giving chance for people to improve. Even in very rare case people are hanged. Otherwise given life imprisonment. We know people doing wrong-things with some reasons. Our country give more importance to people's life. That's the beauty. We go on giving chances to all individuals to reform eventhough we hurt the most.

Opening passengers bag to see if there is something to eat or drink? He is not working 24hrs without water or food.

Airport has shops to sell water. He can even use dispenser kept for staff. How did he know there were mango's inside? Stealing is a crime. What to public do in india when caught stealing. He will be beaten first and then handed over to police, isn't that harsh.

Vantage Point...A person who is working and staying in gulf countries are not at all poor. He can successfully fulfill his hunger by consuming even one dirhaam of parotha. It's an habitual of some people to grab other people's things..which is easily available. It's same like people target homes of elderly people who depend upon cattles for livlihood and people steal the same.

Are they growing mangoes in UAE?

Or are mangoes cheaper in UAE than in India while India is considered the world's largest grower of mangoes?

You are right in your observation, those mangoes become India's import. Who will import mangoes to a country that grows hundreds of varieties of mangoes ? As for them being cheap, UAE imports mangoes from African and Far-Eastern countries like Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, etc. It's possible that they are indeed cheap.
