Beltangady, Sep 26: Heavy downpour which drenched the taluk on Wednesday September 25 evening gave rise to fear of floods again. Although the rain inflicted losses at various places, the people in general are safe.

Didupe and Charmadi, where the rivers were in spate about six weeks back, again experienced rise in levels on Wednesday. Water entered many plantations and several roads in Didupe which were recently constructed, were washed away.

The villages received only some rainfall since 4 pm on Wednesday but because the forest areas got heavy rain, the water level in rivers rose at a fast pace. The water flow at Didupe Bridge looked like the situation this time was worse than the last month's flood. Several streams overflowed. Roads at Didupe and Kukkavu which were repaired recently were again damaged due to rain. Protective walls by the side of the rivers were washed away. Mrityunjaya River at Charmadi overflowed by breaching the banks all of a sudden, but by late evening the water level started to recede slowly. And these areas got rainfall again at night, giving rise to a sense of fear among the people.

Many say that water levels in rivers are rising because of accumulated stones and sand near the vented dams during the previous flood, which were not cleared till now.

However, on Wednesday no landslides were reported from Ghat section in Charmadi.
