Bangalore, Jul 27: Government has constituted State Security Commission under the chairmanship of Chief Minister which will lay down broad policy guidelines to ensure that the police act in accordance with law and Constitution.

Commission will also evaluate the performance of police and submit reports to the state legislature which will be binding on the government. The commission will constitute home minister as its vice-chairman and leader of opposition in the legislative assembly, a retired high court judge nominated by chief justice of Karnataka HC, the chief secretary and additional chief secretary or principal secretary, home department will be other members with director general and inspector general of police (DG & IGP) being the ex-officio secretary of the commission.

It can be recalled here that setting up of the commission was one of the six directions given by the Supreme Court to the state government towards police reforms in the Writ Petition 310/1996. A committee, headed by former DG & IGP R Srikumar was asked to look into the implementation of the six directions. Thus the committee submitted the draft of the new Karnataka Police Act to the government along with a proposal for the security commission to ensure that no unwarranted influence or pressure on the police was exercised.
