Hubli, Jul 27: Primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri on Sunday July 26 urged the central government to intervene in the issue of medium of instruction in order to safeguard the interests of regional languages of the nation.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of ‘Havyaka Habba’ at Hubli, minister said that the issue before the Supreme Court (SC) was not just an issue relating to Kannada language alone as the problem pertaining to making regional language the medium of instruction in schools was common to all the States. Hence, SC’s judgment would have far reaching consequences and be applicable to all regional languages, he observed.

Minister further said that there was no need to bring about constitutional amendment on the issue. But it would be helpful if in the interest of the regional languages the centre formulates a policy to make mandatory the regional language as the medium of instruction at the primary level.

He clarified that the state government was not against teaching English as a language. “In fact, we have already introduced English as language in primary schools,” minister added.
