Mangalore, Sep 5: Citizens  of Valencia and surrounding areas got together on Saturday, 05 September,  for their   save trees programme, `Vruksha bandan' , and  tied `Save me’ boards with   red and white ribbons to the trees which are marked for cutting by Mangalore City Corporation(MCC) to make way for the  proposed road widening  project of Kankanady- Morgans gate sector.

Citizens under the leadership of  Eric Ozario tied bands to  43 trees which will soon face the  MCC axe . The residents  have strongly opposed the move to fell the huge and mighty trees specially those that line both sides of Fr Muller’s Road. They have demanded that the MCC   reverse the master plan and redesign the  road widening project so as not to cut the trees.

Eric Ozario said, it is part of our silent protest to let the MCC officials know that trees too have lives and give life to others. This is the fourth protest programme but the MCC has not given any satisfactory reply .

The programme was supported by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students Federation of India (SFI) Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC), Peoples union for Civil Liberties.

I express my concern with all that are against felling of trees. However, saving trees should not hinder the progress. In which case I suggest that people encourage to plant such trees once the roadworks are completed and in a few years from now we will have broader and safer roads as well the green trees growing to replace the once that were felled. Development of road network in Mangalore in very imperative.

Come rains Mangalore is left with no roads so it is the need of the hour to have good roads if Mangalore has to develop further. Sorry guys, trees can always be replaced by planting new one''s.

When Corrupt Govt. Officials and elected officials get out of control, this is how to control them, with force and determination without breaking the Law. Thank you everyone who is involved,May God Bless you all. Special thanks to Vidya Dinker and Eric Ozario, for your courage. Both of you did a great job in defeating Dharmaraj, who thinks that no one can bend Him.

Nature and environment is at risk in many countries, you have taken the right step to protect the area where you live in. Save the trees, make locals sensitive for nature. Best Kurt

The beauty of Mangalore lies in its greenary. Destroying the trees will have adverse effect not only the beauty but the climate. Mangalore used to receive about 500CM of rain some 10 years back but because of deforestation we receive now about 300 CM of rain. Soon we will have water problems. Let''s support ''Nannannu Rakshisi'' movement. I request the support of all Mangaloreans.

I think the residents around the area from Kankanady to Morgans Gate must start the "Chipko Andolan" or "Hug the Trees Movement" to save those trees. We feel so helpless sitting in far off lands and seeing our beloved nature being destroyed.
