Beltangady, Oct 10:
The ‘Bhoomi Puja’ for the proposed Guttinamane (traditional majestic house in the Tulunadu in the past) at Vishwa Tulu Sammelan venue at Ujire was held at 8.31 am on Friday October 9.

The Sammelan will be held from Thursday December 10 to Sunday December 13.

Former state minister K Amaranath Shetty was also present at the ceremony performed by temple priests in the presence of Hemavathi V Heggade, wife of Dr Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala.

Vishwa Tulu Sammelan convening committee chief secretary Dr B Yasho Varma, Prof S Prabhakar, Vijayaraghav Padvetnaya, zilla panchayat member Icchila Sundar Gowda, Babu Mogera Yernody, and Beltangady block Congress president K Harish Kumar were present on the occasion.

Religious and social programmes used to be held in Guttinamanes led by its landlords in the Tulunadu of yore.  All the villagers would gather in the courtyard of the Guttinamane.

It is also significant that the Guttinamane would act as a jury in settling family feuds and other disputes of villagers.  The ruins of such Guttinamanes are still found at Bailangady, Kulur, Yermal, Padubidri, Moodbidri, Mangalore, Nada, Bangady, Aladangady, Suralu, Karkala, and other villages in undivided Dakshina Kannada district.

These structures are slowly disintegrating due to lack of upkeep as joint families in the region have dwindled due to migration to metros and other countries after the introduction of the Land Tribunal Act which brought to an end the legacy of landlords in the coastal district.

The theme village will be set up at Ajjerekallu hillock near SDM High School, Ujire, in the midst of a palm plantation.
