Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 6: The 105-year-old Bageerathi Amma passed her fourth standard exam and has become the oldest learner of the Kerala State Literacy Mission with a score of 74.5 per cent marks.
Bageerathi Amma belongs to Parakulam in Kollam district and is mother to six children and grandmother to 16 grandkids.
In a report by ANI, CK Pradeep Kumar, district co-ordinator of State Literacy Mission was quoted as saying, "Bageerathi Amma has passed her exam with 74.5 per cent marks. It is an inspiration for others to follow her and continue their education."
Reportedly, Bageerathi Amma dropped out of school at the age of nine when she was in Class 3 to take care of her younger siblings. But, she always had a yearning to study more and her dream was realised with the help of Kerala State Literacy Mission, an autonomous institution set up under the General Education Department, Government of Kerala.
Bageerathi Amma feels grateful to the programme which helped her clear her fourth standard equivalency examination with a score of 205 out of a total of 275 marks.
The programme aims to develop literacy skills through continuing education and by providing a chance to anyone interested in learning. It also ensures secondary-level education to the whole of Kerala and their targeted segment are the illiterates, neo-literates, school drop-outs and the ones interested in lifelong education.
