Politicians No Longer Role Models for Indian Students

By Richa Sharma

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru are their national heroes but the present politicians do not influence Indian adolescents. A study has revealed that a majority of children don't consider politicians as their role models.

A team of psychologists carried out the study among 500 students from Delhi schools. The goal of the research was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the role models of children.

"Political leaders from the past and freedom fighters were role models for 13 percent of the students in contrast to recent political leaders who were significant role models for only two percent of the students," psychiatrist Samir Parikh, who led the study, told IANS.

Parikh, chief of the mental health and behavioural sciences department, Max Healthcare, said: "The study clearly indicates that the values and beliefs reflected by our yesteryear leaders are valued and have an impact upon children and adolescents."

For students, the most significant role models were their parents. Thirty percent of them indicated that they look towards their parents as role models.

"We may feel that our children do not listen to us but for a large number of adolescents it is from parents that they learn how to behave and respond. Thus it is essential that as parents we display the behaviour and feelings that we expect our children to inculcate," said Parikh.

According to Parikh, children learn what they see and by modelling the right behaviours we can encourage them to adopt good habits.

Teachers follow closely behind parents with 13 percent students indicating that they view them as their role models.

"This places a significant onus of responsibility upon educators to demonstrate appropriate behaviours and help in the overall growth and development of children and adolescents," he said.

Children look up to scientists and entrepreneurs as their professional role models.

"Students stated that prominent scientists and entrepreneurs and business people too are looked up to for inspiration. They try to learn responsibility, focussing on work, achieving goals and ambitions from them," said Parikh.

In contrast, only seven percent voted for the media. This finding may come as a surprise to those who believe that children are swayed by media personalities.

Sports personalities stood second lowest at six percent. This indicates the need to enhance the impact of sports personalities on children so that they are encouraged to take up sports, which is a relatively neglected area in our educational system, said Parikh.

"The results of the study were clearly indicative of the significant impact of people from various walks of life upon young and developing minds, and how they need to mediate the behaviours they display, their thought patterns, and their emotional experiences," he said.

In our Bible it says that "Jesus Christ Suffered for us pardoning all our sins". IN the same way the Mahatma and Nehru suffered for us so that the coming generation could lead a life of dignity and freedom. Today's politicians have made the life of common man miserable. They do not enter politics to serve people but to serve themself. I would never say that all politicians are corrupted but even the uncorrupted one's can never be role models. If you really want to be a role model politician or a honest Govt servant, you will not be allowed as the corrupted system changes oneself. In today's life you can never find a Role Model Politician or Actor or Singer or teachers. Since 20 years we are living a different world of fast tech, fast food, fast cars and everything that is fast. Slow has no patience. My work should be faster than time. Even If I want to do my work slowly and accurately that produces good long term results we are not allowed to do so as we have to work fast for short term gains. In India All Govt Offices has the photo of Mahatma and under the photo itself deals are settled for personal gains. Today's politicians are interested to know how much power and control they have with them so that it increases their personal wealth. Another Mahatma has to be born to get us out of this 62 years of Independence Mess created by today's rulers.

How can a corrupt goon politician be a role model of modern India children. We as a parent dont want to spoil our kid by names of politicians rather we give example like "Son if you dont study or work hard you will be like that corrupt ministers" Whatever. So people stop giving lesson of politicians because children learn bad thing first including names of corrupt politicians.

Indian students are smart so they have ignored the politicians as role models. Gandhiji and Nehru took politics with selfless motive to bring freedom to India. They never made money from politics, but see the number of rich people who started politics from soup kitchens! Still, there are a very few honest politicians in society. There are great people in many profession, watch them carefully about their ethics, honesty, patriotism, values etc, and make the right decision to have one or more people to look at, as models to be followed.

The Finding is not a surprise at all.Our political leaders ceased to be role models since more than two decades. How can a political leader who hops from party to party just for the sake of power with scant respect for ideology or policy be considered a role model? The netas who become crorepatis overnight, after becoming a MLA or MP or a minister cannot expect the children to treat them as role models. Conduct of most of our netas, with very few exceptions,is simply nauseating. God save this country.
