Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, first since Covid-19 lockdown

New Delhi, Mar 28 (IANS): For the first time since India went into the lockdown mode in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, he sought ideas for the Sunday's Radio programme, "On the 29th (March), this month's #MannKiBaat will take place. Would love to hear your suggestions for the programme. Dial 1800-11-7800 to record your message. Or, share your inputs on MyGov and the NaMo App," the Prime Minister tweeted.

It's widely believed that Modi will talk on health, hygiene and India's war on coronavirus that has affected 873 and killed 19.

According to sources, the Prime Minister may dedicate a segment of the 'Mann Ki Baat' for the coronavirus warriors -- doctors, nurses, police personnel -- who are at the frontline.

On Friday, when the Prime Minister reached out to select radio jockeys (RJs) to help disseminate correct information about the pandemic, they called him part of the fraternity as he hosted this radio show with a massive listener base, across India.

Here are the some steps government should take to ease the suffering of the poorest Indians if 'Mann ki Baat' becomes meaningful.
    1. Give three months pension (old age, widows, persons with disabilities) in advance in April.
    2. The Central government’s contribution to social security pensions has been stuck at Rs 200 per person per month. These must immediately be increased to at least Rs. 1,000 per month.
    3. Universalise social security pensions. Identifying all those who are above 60 years of age, single women, etc. is one easy way of scaling up cash transfers.
    4. For National Rural Employment Guarantee Act workers, the central government must clear all wage arrears from the 2019-20 financial year immediately.
    5. Provide 10 days wages for a job card, in cash or through their bank accounts for the coming three months, without work, due to risk of community transmission.
    6. In later months, when risk of community transmission subsides, assure them work for at least 20 days per month for those who are willing to work.
    7. For all cash transfer schemes (e.g., pension, NREGA wages, Prime Minister’s Kisan Yojna), avoid Aadhaar-Payment Bridge System because of the problem of rejected and failed payments.
    8. Double Rations
    9. Expand Public Distribution System coverage
    10. For advance or free distribution
    11. The government muster consider provision of soap, dal and oil through the PDS for the coming months.
    12. Discontinue Aadhaar-Based Biometric Authentication immediately because of risk of transmission.
    13. Close anganwadis and schools, provide dry rations at home.
    14. Shelter for migrants.
    15. No harassment of migrant workers
    16. Community kitchens for all
    17. Each state should clearly specify what services are included under essential services.
    18. Controlled prices for essential goods.
    19. Each district administration needs to set up a daily roster for people to get essential goods and services.
    20. Make Swach Bhart daily affairs.
