New Delhi, Apr 25: The central government announced on Friday that the national lockdown was a smart and timely step initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If it was not for this, the number of COVID-19 cases in India would have touched 1 lac by now.
Officials revealed in a press briefing that the outbreak in India is currently under control and credited this to the vigorous surveillance network, the implementation of the lockdown and other restrictions imposed.

11 empowered groups were established to suggest methods to ramp up healthcare, bring the economy back on track and reduce the difficulties of the residents once the lockdown is lifted. According to the analysis conducted, the chairman of Empowered Group One and Niti Aayog member, V K Paul said that the lockdown has been successful in slowing the rate at which COVID-19 cases are doubling in the country, as it now stands at 10 days.
Around March 21, the number of cases doubled every 3 days. However, there was an improvement after the Janata curfew and the doubling rate increased to five. By this time travel restrictions were imposed and an environment for social distancing was created. From April 6 onwards, the doubling time started slowing down, he added.
He further said that the curve has begun to flatten and that the outbreak is now under control. However, officials say that these projections are based on the growth pattern during a particular time.
S K Singh, the Director of the National Centre of Disease Control said that India’s primary weapon in fighting this battle has been surveillance. He added that since our surveillance mechanism had begun even before the first case was reported in India, the spread of the virus was largely contained.
Surveillance networks have been set up at the district levels so that household surveys, quarantine and isolation are conducted as part of the cluster containment plan. About 9.45 lac suspected coronavirus patients are currently under surveillance upon the detection of symptoms.
Lav Agarwal, the joint secretary in the Health Ministry announced that in the past 28 days, over 15 districts have had no new cases, while 80 districts of the nation have not reported any new case in the past two weeks.
