Mangalore: Untimely Rain Worries Agriculturists

Mangalore, Dec 30: Cloudy weather envelopes the coast and several places in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts, which continued to receive rainfall on Tuesday December 29. The department predictions about the continued rains have made the farmers to get extremely worried about their crops.

Places like Subrahmanya and Sullia got heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning. Lot of devotees on a visit to temple town Subrahmanya faced inconveniences, and farmers growing areca nut, cashew and paddy have been caught unawares by the sudden rains since the last some days. The paddy and areca nut there were laid out for drying got drenched, while the flowers  formed in the cashew trees are falling to the ground, weakening the prospects of a good crop.  Fields where the farmers have sown black gram, green gram and other pulses now stand under water, and these crops also face the prospect of getting destroyed.

Karkala taluk received heavier rains as compared to other parts of Udupi district on Tuesday. Lightning caused damage to electronic equipments of a few houses in Santoor, Padubidri etc. The tourists, who came to Kodagu for spending the year end holidays, were disappointed because of rains. Coffee crop also is getting affected by the untimely rain, as quality coffee cannot be produced out of the coffee beans that have been improperly dried.
