Karwar, Jan 3: The Hyderabad-based Ind Bharat Power (Karwar) Ltd (IBPL) will shift the proposed 450 mw coal-based Hanakon thermal power project in Karwar to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu bowing to public that protested setting up of a power plant in an ecologically sensitive zone.

The Hanakon Ushna Sthavara Virodhi Horata Samiti protested against the power plant being set up at Hanakon.

Speaking at a press meet here on Saturday January 3, company’s executive director A N Vasu Rao said, “The thermal power plant at Hanakon has been shifted due to strong public protest and considering the delicate environment issues. Now, the project will be established in Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.”

Medical college, hi-tech hospitals and resorts which are environment-friendly ventures will be taken up in the region instead of the project, he said. Clarifying certain allegations against the company he said, “We had not submitted any false records to obtain permission for the setting up of the thermal plant, but had requested relevant departments for permission.

Samiti legal advisor K R Desai said, “It is a historic day to the people of Uttara Kannada district. Let IBPL take up environment-friendly projects here. We are not against development but are opposed to any project that is harmful to the environment,” he added.

All is Well Ends Well. I hope Nagarjuna thermal power plant also will shift, or change to gas based one, to benefit all the people surrounding as well as the future of not letting thermal foot-print on the planet earth. Hope better sense will prevail among the govt. as well as the stake holder company. Our future health depends on a small step taken now, which will have a huge impact in future.
