Trump drifted away from constitution: Ex-military chief Powell

Washington, Jun 8 (IANS): Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has strongly criticised President Donald Trump's handling of anti-racism protests, saying he has "drifted away" from the constitution.

The Republican, a former top military officer, is the latest to condemn Trump's response, including his threats to use the army to quell rallies, the BBC reported on Monday.

He said he would vote for Democratic candidate Joe Biden in November's poll.

President Trump responded by calling Powell "highly overrated".

Powell, the only African American so far to have served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has joined a growing list of former top military officials to have launched scathing attacks on President Trump.

It comes amid days of nationwide protests against racism and police brutality sparked by the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on 25 May.

On Sunday, nine of 13 Minneapolis City Council members pledged in front of hundreds of protesters to dismantle the local police department and instead create "a new model of public safety that actually keeps our community safe".

Meanwhile, security measures across the US were lifted as unrest started to ease. New York ended its nearly week-long curfew, and Trump said he was ordering the National Guard to start withdrawing from Washington DC.

"We have a constitution. And we have to follow that constitution. And the president has drifted away from it," Powell said.

Referring to President Trump, the retired four-star general said: "He lies about things, and he gets away with it because people will not hold him accountable."

    This official had told in the past that he would vote for hillary and not trump in 2016 even before trump was presisdent so he loses credibility.
    Most Bush era officials hate trump Republicans included. There are many people in the trump administration and other government agencies who hate him. So you cannot expect an unbiased opinion either from these officials. Like him or not, he is the only leader who is attacking our rogue neighbour whether it is political or not. He can't backtrack from what he has said or done. It would be a huge loss of face.Our rogue neighbour is trying to control and dominate us.They have already captured our market and every rupee that we pay for their goods will be used to attack and infiltrate our land. If you do no believe me then check the propoganda thet play about us in their country. They think we are inferior and stupid and that they are the strongest and most intelligent race.They are more cunning than nazis Yet we buy their goods and help them become stronger and richer.They boast that they were able to control the pandemic entirely but then they should be held accountable for allowing the virus to spread. Why did it spread to other parts of the world but very little damage has been done to other parts of their country.Trump is a laughing stock in their country. They (and a lot more people) hate him not because the consider him to be a fool/idiot/feku or that he lacks emapthy but they have other reasons to hate him. I am not blindly supporting him or claiming that he is a saint. I have done my research and I know a lot more anti trump arguments that most people. Trump can never be a dictator or break up the constitution. There are more anti trump people than pro trump in this world. He also face strong opposition from the congress(dem ruled) and has thin majority in the senate(rep). Most people have biased opinion about him so they think like that.
    IMO, trump(vs opp) would be good for our country especially national security

    Powell made the announcement on CNN and said that while he will vote for Biden, he will not hit the campaign trail. His decision is not that stunning. He said he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

    Powell -
    "I'm very close to Joe Biden in a social matter and in a political matter," Powell said. "I've worked with him for 35, 40 years. And he is now the candidate and I will be voting for him."

    Trump -
    “Colin Powell was a pathetic interview today on Fake News CNN,” Trump tweeted. “In his time, he was weak & gave away everything to everybody- so bad for the USA. Also got the “weapons of mass destruction” totally wrong, and you know that that mistake cost us? Sad! Only negative questions asked.”

    I think in India it is high time we started a movement "#WomensLivesMatter". This is the need of the hour considering the rise in sexual crimes even during the Lockdown period.

    Left leaning democrats( including Powell,) elites and communist chinese first brought out virus and now using race against race to bring their total godless communist takeover of US. How many millions coloured people they made to undergo abortion in the name Planned Parenthood thereby reducing coloured population, God only knows but they don't raise voices against it or ignore.

    In Europe they are using religion against religion to remove all religions for that they have already brought influx of foreign nationals in Europe and to bring their Godless rule all over the world or to bring their new world order.

    It has been prophesied there will severe earthquakes in China and Russia for their cunning plan also God would remove wicked atheistic pro communists to bring lasting peace soon.

    Security Council, Powell alleged that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction from inspectors and refusing to disarm. However, after the U.S. had invaded Iraq and overthrown Saddam Hussein, no weapons of mass destruction were found. "Of course I regret that a lot of it turned out be wrong," he said.
