Karkala, Apr 12: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said here on Sunday that his Government was according priority to solving the power problem in the State. He was speaking at Vijay Sankalpa Samavesha, a convention of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gram panchayat delegates from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu and Chikmagalur districts.

Mr. Yeddyurappa blamed the present power problem in the State on the previous Governments. He said that the previous Governments had not taken any initiative to solve the problem.

The State Government had sought 1,500 MW from the Central Grid but was not getting anything because of the step-motherly treatment by the Centre, he alleged. The Udupi Power Corporation Ltd was expected to produce 600 MW of power by the first week of May. The State Government was trying to purchase power from other States to ease power situation. “We will achieve self-sufficiency in power generation within the next three years”, he said.

The State Government plans to have a circular train service in Bangalore. A survey would be conducted to study the feasibility of starting monorail between Mangalore and Udupi, and Hubli and Dharwad, he said.

The State Government had set aside Rs. 1,000 crore for the development of cities and towns in the State. An amount of Rs. 100 crore would be allocated to repair 200 km of five ghat roads in the State. The Government would draw up a scheme to provide a loan of Rs. 70,000 to farmers to buy two cows or buffaloes. The BJP had already started making plans to win 150 seats in the next Assembly elections to be held three years from now. It was aiming to win all 28 Parliamentary seats in the next Lok Sabha elections. The party had begun the process of screening candidates for the seats where it was weak, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

BJP general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar said that the party wanted to win majority of the seats in the coming gram panchayat elections and the taluk and zilla panchayat elections which would be held by the end of the year.

BJP State unit president K.S. Eshwarappa, Ministers V.S. Acharya, Basavaraj Bommai, and Krishna Palemar were among those present.
