IPL is Money Laundering, Ban It, Say MPs

New Delhi, Apr 19 (IANS): A call to ban and probe the funding source of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament grew louder in parliament Monday, a day after Shashi Tharoor quit the government over his controversial link to the IPL Kochi franchise.

Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha termed IPL as "gambling" in the name of cricket and alleged that black money stashed in foreign banks was invested in the IPL.

Speaker Meira Kumar allowed the matter of "urgent importance" to be raised during the zero hour.

Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Gurudas Dasgupta said the matter did not stop at Tharoor resigning as minister of state for external affairs.

"The minister's resignation is not the issue. The issue is the IPL. We have not gone into the route. Issue is laundering of money. All this is happening under the nose of the government of India," he said.

Stressing that the shorter Twenty20 version of cricket was not in the interest of the sport, Dasgupta said: "Cricket is being maligned in the country. Wrong message is given to the budding cricketers to join the Twenty20 and earn crores."

"Black money is coming from Mauritius and Dubai through dubious sources and betting is going on openly…It is a only a game of gamble, an organised gamble."

"The IPL may be banned and a thorough probe ordered," he added.

The CPI leader also called for a joint parliamentary committee to probe the source of IPL funding.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad said the opposition wasn't targeting Tharoor but had demanded that "murky IPL business of shame and glamour" be probed to know where the money comes from and where it goes.

"Why target Tharoor only? The main culprit is this IPL. This is a gambling and betting business. There are bigwigs involved. The entire network should be probed," Lalu Prasad said.

The RJD leader demanded that the government take over the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a private consortium and the apex governing body for cricket in the country.

When Lalu Prasad asked for a probe into the multi-million dollar cricket tournament, Speaker Meira Kumar cautioned him against naming anybody.

"Oh, I am sorry…I mean a top IPL official has purchased a jet and has huge wealth. This should be probed," he said.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said the "foreign sport" was being wrongly promoted in the country at the cost of national games.

Janata Dal-United president Sharad Yadav raised the same demand. "You have removed your minister. It doesn't stop there."

The demand from the opposition comes after embattled Tharoor Sunday night stepped down over his links to the IPL Kochi franchise. He resigned after a weeklong drama after it was disclosed that his friend Sunanda Pushkar had received a sweat equity worth Rs.70 crore in the deal.

If some one makes/earns more money the other one gets jealous about that, this is what happens in the world of business. The better way is growing or starting more business like this may create more competetions and more people will be employed and will get their share for better living.

If IPL is banned some others in other part of the world will take the advantage start another Club. It is better to see that the kiths & kins of the organisers are not the investors of the team either directly or indirectly. The whole dealings are 100% transparent. The chief utive is not one person instead three CEOs like sitting judges in the higher courts. Most importantly, a portion of the profit should benefit the most neglected and financial non-viable sports and their arenas in the rural regions.

Dear Deven, all said and done whatever the opposition MP's are saying is true, the whole IPL looks pretty murky and certainly is laundering. The income tax raids and the probe will bring out the truth. Secondly because of the huge earnings/payments budding young talents will concentrate on dubious cricket and disregard other sports which bring name and fame to the country.

IPL has become a mafia now. If you anlayse the things in a particular view, all the hidden agenda behind shifting IPL SF's to Mumbai you would would know how much the Ambani's might have lobbyed BCCI or Lalith Modi as they dint feel secure to face RCB in Bangalore. The bombs were only crude just to create panic and shift the venue. If any terrorist organizations where behind it they wouldnt have made such silly bombs just to scare people. Hidden IPL agenda.

Please, please, don`t! It`s very very intertaining and full of thrills and excitment!. Even though the matches here in Austrlia are relayed to us during nightly hours mostly between 8.30 p.m. and 4.00 a.m, being retired recently and do not have to get up and go for work in the morning any longer, it is for the first time that I have been able to watch them in full during these nightly hours, and catch up with the sleep during the day time. Unfortunately, corruption is going on in every field of activity, not only in cricket - so what else is going to be banned?! IPL20 is very popular and a big hit here in Australia and also I presume in every cricket playing nation and elsewhere, and mainly because of IPL, India has been getting good recognition and reputation lately, worldwide.

It is surprising that half the MPs with criminal backgrouds that make up half the parliament talk about money laundering. Are all these MPs clean? Nobody asks the question where they get all the money to fight elections etc or for that matter the big businesses they themselves own...coming with suggestions stating they ban it! Come on MPs wake up.

Earlier cricket players were involved in match fixing. Now it has been taken over by the cricket administration under the supervision of ICC. The loot is shared by the cricket boards and the players. If betting in horse races is allowed why not cricket? Make it official and let everyone have a share including the Governments in terms of taxes.
