Udupi, May 1: A two-day state-level seminar on the theme, Coastal culture and scope for research was inaugurated at INA Auditorium, Brahmagiri here on Saturday May 1.

MLA K Raghupati Bhat inaugurating the seminar said that the coastal areas are apt for research in comparison to other regions. The undivided district especially scores when it comes to scope for research in literature, culture and folklore, he observed.

MLA said that since time immemorial, our district has contributed immensely for the development of Kannada literature. This has been possible mainly due to the contribution through the indigenous art, Yakshagana, he said and added that first grade colleges along with studies should also give due importance to research as well.

Delivering the keynote address, Mangalore University registrar K Chinappa Gowda said that the way higher education is being viewed by the youth has witnessed a sea change. Along with study and lecturing, research too is prime, he said.

Gowda said that today country’s development is also dependent of educational institutions unlike about two decades ago when the development issues were discussed only in the financial institutions. Instead of categorizing research as compartments like folklore, history and Kannada, an inclusive research on Castal culture can be taken up, he observed.

College principal Prof yogananda, Dr Gananath Yekkar, head, Kannada department, Dr Niketana, co-ordinator Kannada postgraduate department and federation secretary Revaiah Wodeyar were present.

The workshop is jointly organized by Government First Grade College, Tenkanidiyoor, Kannada Postgradudate Studies department and Karnataka Researchers’ Federation, Bangalore and sponsored by United Grants Commission.
