Mangaluru, Nov 11: Believe it or not, here is a man who cultivates his paddy farm, situated in the heart of the city from several years, despite rejecting several lucrative offers, demanding his land.

As paddy cultivation is gradually declining in rural areas of the coastal region and farmers are shifting cultivation from paddy to other commercial crops, Francis Saldahna, a retired superintendent of Karnataka Government Insurance Department, is into paddy farming on a 1.2-acre land.

In the city, several people have sold their agricultural lands for lucrative amounts, but Francis, a resident of Malaraya Layout in Chilimbi, has cultivated paddy on 1.2 acres out of 1.6 acres of land. Though several people have approached him, demanding his land for a profitable price, Francis did not accept it. And his love for paddy cultivation did not deter him cultivating the same.

Thirty years ago, Francis started the work of paddy cultivation. Even while he was working in the Karnataka Government Insurance Department, he used to join work by availing 15 days leave during sowing and another 15 days leave during harvesting.

Moreover, ten years ago, Francis had a pair of buffaloes to till his land. As he could not maintain increasing expense in nurturing the buffaloes, he had to sell them. Later, he depended upon a tiller machine for cultivation. Annually, Francis reaps 12 quintals of paddy from his field.

He also stated that nearly 13 to 15 labourers from Permude in Bajpe join him during cultivation and harvesting of paddy.

Speaking daijiworld.com, Francis said, "I have received several offers, asking me to sell the land. But, I always remember my father's saying, ‘It is always easy to sell land, but it is very difficult to buy land. Once a land is sold, it is gone. It is very difficult to buy land’.”

He also said that he is not into agriculture by availing loans. "When I cannot meet the profit in paddy cultivation, I balance it through cultivating other commercial crops and growing vegetables. There is always reward, if one works with dedication and hard work," he added.

    Cynthia and Lan

In my parent's home (now my brother's home) in Kelmbet, Bola, these activites such as ploughing the field, Neji nedre/bhatha koyyere were there earlier. But, now, ploughing is done by tractor, there is no neji nedre because due to labour cost, they just spread the seeds in the field. Also, cutting bhatha, there is a machine that does everything, even separates bhatha. Present machine activities are cost effective, but larger fields are needed. Now, only Francis is doing with the help of labourers and I think he has not done cost estimates. In Kelmbet, acres and acres of land are not cultivated these days, since some of the children working outside India, have checked profit/loss and told their elders to take rest and leave the fields as they are.

Lan... Sir, I appreciate your support/cooperation and encouragement. But, I feel since you are working there since many years, now it will be very difficult to plough the fields. Your hands will pain, palms will get boils since no practice of the same. May be till your twelth standard you must have done ploughing. Now, if you get down into the fields ಯೆರ್ಲು might chase us all from the vicinity. You sit and watch our work that's sufficient... God's grace be upon you always...

Good! Keep going! The way communist chinese are ruining the world, economy with their viruses, shutdown, lockdowns to cunningly control the world sooner businesses and banks will have major problems.

If businesses go down, banks also follow the suite. One never knows. Then where is the bank interest? Communist Chinese plans seems to be world has to rely on them for finance or borrow from them, to enslave the humanity and to control the world.

    Moral of this article:-
We won't have a society if we destroy the environment.
Environment is no one's property to destroy; it's everyone's responsibility to protect.
We don't have to sacrifice a strong economy for a healthy environment.
A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself.
Good message to society daijiworld. Keep it up!

    @ Sampath, Mlore/ Blor

Sampath, I have expressed that during his latter age he may find it difficult to continue cultivating land unless his children take interest. At that juncture, what is your opinion ? your can check in DK villages how people are giving up paddy cultivation or switching other less labor demanding seasonal crops.
I do not want to drag the matter any further.

    It's true.
In line with your explanation if at all land owners have kept their land intact there could have been any multi storied residential/commercial complexes in Mangalore. We need to keep growing along with the flow of modernization and other developments. As far as I remember, the first residential complex was built by Lobo Prabhu, (eminent Advocate and Attorney genral) at Light house hill.

I fully agree with you of the fact that agriculture is the life line of our living But due to multiple problems cultivation (paddy) has strenuous and farmers are switching to less labor demanding seasonal crops like coconut, arecanut which demands on time efforts and later nurturing them. You can check yourself how many youngsters from village have gone abroad seeking better fortune and fast bucks.
Cultivation demands lots of energy and output but and can sustain as long as someone remains physically fit but labor problems another issue.

In view of expanding ever expanding Mangalore City (now smart City) and mushrooming of residential and commercial complexes in corporation limit most of the vacant lands have been occupied by builders. Layouts are developed and hills are levelled in many areas there by causing land slides. Greenery is barely maintained and ultimately unexpected irregular rains pouring as if there is no tomorrow.

Flavian Kuwait, many have sold their land in and around mangalore ,because of lack of labourers, their high daily wages ,demands during their work etc, mostly to building ,flats and before that all for preparing ite to build house walls. That was the beginning of end of our fields. There are hardly any labourers now a days, since they found working in kuwait ,dubai etc brings more gold and money than field work.and prosperity.so end of cultivation. One who was not educated remained back .now everywhere are areca trees where previously fields were.

    Great achievement Mr. Francis,
I too had this type paddy cultivation till 1995 in one acre land within the city limit and yielded more than 20 quintals. Unfortunately due to the Lac of local authorities the rain water drain channels were blocked by the automobile dealers to build up their showrooms and workshops by filling up the surrounding agricultural fields by purchasing and filling up to National highway level. I faced several problems due to this our paddy fields were duped during the month of October when paddy was ready for harvesting. about 3 years the total paddy yield is lost, we put several efforts with local authority to release the blockage of tunnels , no one has supported and even till date the issue is not solved. Because of these reason only I stopped the cultivation .
It is very difficult in Mangalore, several agriculturist will left of f cultivation due to these reasons only.

It's his wish and will power to continue cultivation and keeping the land. However, this is not possible for a longer run as he is attaining old age and other labour issues. In juncture it would be advisable to think in terms of disposing part of the land and live on bank deposits and earned interest.

@Flavian, Mangaluru/Kuwait your view is profitable for short term , however distractive for the longer run. I think we should appreciate and also govt has give more and more accolades and support to agriculturist.
We come across many Bharata ratna/padmabushan awards given to Film actors, sports man /Artist but as per my knowledge a agriculturist has not received any such accolades.

if we keep on continue the current trend our next generations would not be getting to eat Rice/wheat/Ragi and so on.

Nobody can manage to live on bank interest, as the interest rates are going down and will keep going down. Interest earned after TDS will not even cover the rate of inflation. Whereas value of the land will appreciate much more than the rate of interest. Working in the fields will keep him active & healthy and also he will get healthy organic food to eat. So dear Francis keep cultivating your land, as long as you are healthy and able to work.
