Bangalore, May 26: State minister for medical education, Ramachandra Gowda, revealed that the centre has indicated its inclination to permit enhanced intake of students for MBBS courses in the government colleges in the state, from the present 150 to 250. This will come into force from the next academic year.

However, before allowing this increased intake, the colleges need to improve the infrastructural facilities to the stated level. “The government has plans to put the necessary infrastructure in place. However, recruitment of teaching staff in medical colleges is posing problems. Already most of the medical colleges are under-staffed as the candidates with requisite qualification and experience are not coming forth to join the colleges as teaching staff,” he explained.

He said that the government had already delegated the medical colleges with the power to recruit teaching staff through walk-in interviews, to tide over the problem. He added that the process of recruiting about 500 paramedical staff had been commenced.
