Mangalore Crash : No DNA Match Between Remaining Unidentified Bodies and Claimants
MANGALORE, Jun 2 (The Hindu): The families of 12 persons, out of the 158 killed in the May 22 Air India Express crash, will never get the opportunity to perform the last rites of their departed kin as per their faiths.
The final DNA report, received by the district administration on Tuesday, has concluded that the DNA of 11 bodies in the custody of the district administration does not match samples provided by the claimants.
To begin with, the district administration had 22 unidentified bodies. The first report, which arrived on May 26, identified nine of 10 bodies. Another body was identified on May 28, and taking the one body from the May 26 report into account, 12 bodies remained unidentified. In its latest report, the Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) said: “It is certified from the DNA profiling results that the 11 bodies' remains are not related to any of the 34 claimants whose blood samples were used for analysis and comparison.” (The 34 claimants belonged to 22 families.)
Addressing a press conference late on Tuesday, in-charge Deputy Commissioner S.A. Prabhakar Sharma said: “The district administration will now take over the responsibility of performing the last rites of the 12 unidentified persons as per the power granted to it under the Disaster Management Act 2005.” He said the bodies will be buried and not cremated to provide for further legal recourse such as exhumation.
The news left the families that have no bodies to claim crestfallen. Speaking to the media, Abdul Aziz, whose 28-year-old brother Mohammed Ismael died in the crash, said the family had not seen Ismael for three years.
“He decided to come home to meet us after a lot of coaxing. Now we don't even get to see his body,” Mr. Aziz said.
Conceding that the latest DNA results point to a mix-up, Mr. Sharma said there was extreme pressure on the district administration on the day of the crash.

Sun, Jun 06 2010The reason is simple. The so called experts from Hyderabad were not from Forensic DNA background and do not carry the expertise. Challenge me and I will prove it. The said Dr Reddy is a microbiologist and his appointment itself to that post has been challenged in a CBI Court. So how can anyone expect results. Forget it.

Wed, Jun 02 2010Mr. DMD, How do you know that compensation has paid to the people who collected the body? Does your family member involved in the crash? If not please do not bark. Money has paid only after producing required document as per AI legal department requirement. AI will pay the compensation for the family who’s kin has lost even though they did collect the body but they must submit required document as per AI legal department. Most Indians have no knowledge, they more interested in gossips

Wed, Jun 02 2010The reason DNA not matching may be those DNA bodies handed over to other releatives earlier , may be this remaining bodies must have those releatives who already claimed wrong body . authority should have checkd all the bodys DNA before handing over they maight have matched DNA so we would not seen this one more tragedy .

Wed, Jun 02 2010Dear DM Dsouza, your logic is not justified in this very moment. No relatives will claim the wrong bodies intentionally, and you cannot blame them if they have claimed and cremated thinking that is their relative. It was Administrations responsiblity to look after such things. And again DNA samples may be wrongly labelled. Some of the arms and Limbs were dislocated of other bodies may be exchanged, so here the base itself is not right. So the mass cremation is the best choice for the remaining bodies and there should not be any delays in the compensation on this ground.

Tue, Jun 01 2010Very sad thing to happen on top of tragedy & untimely bereavement for the family members, who lost their kith & kin. Now they won't get the compensation as well, as these bodies donot belong to them, let alone performing the last rights.
Probably the adminstration should have taken the DNA samples of all the recovered bodies, then the ones unidentified but some bodies identified wrongly as their own might have got the real claiments. But its too late now. The administration now need to ask for those people who have claimed the bodies & have performed the last rights for their DNA samples, to verify the unresolved, unidentified bodies. If they refuse now to give samples, then they should be barred from recieving any further compensation, as well as taking steps to recover the compensation already paid on the basis of their (assumed)wrong identification. This EXTREME step need to be taken by the adminstration in the wake of unfortuante events that have unfolded in the wake of this unprecendented tragedy taken place on illfated travellers of The plane.
Dear Walter N. Please bring this point of view to the notice of the District Adminstration to help the distraught family members & resolve the tangle amicably & justifiably to the satisfaction of all the parties.
