Puttur: BJP Distances Itself from Punacha School Closure Controversy

Puttur, Jun 11: Local assembly constituency committee of the BJP said that it has nothing to do with the issue of closure of Shastriji high school in Pariyaltadka, Punacha, and that the allegations being levelled by the Congress leaders against the BJP are misdirected. “It is everybody’s knowledge that the said school was illegally functioning, and was admitting people from minority and weaker sections of the society by giving them false information. It also had violated all the instructions of the department of public instruction,” said president of the committee, Gopalakrishna Herale, on Thursday June 10.

In the meanwhile, speaking to pressmen, Manila Subbanna Shastri said that the land, on which the above school was functioning, had been earmarked by the Manila family for running a school. He alleged that Harsh Shastri and his wife, Usha Lakshmi belonging to Manila family have been running the school like authoritarians since the last 25 years. “After five families of the Manila lineage approached the High Court, the court had issued permanent injunction against using this land for any other activity other than education. The Shastri couple had transferred land meant for educational institutions, for other activities. They violated the government directions and broke the locks placed by the department to the doors of the high school. A police case is pending against this action,” Shastri said.

Neerkaje Jayashyam said that Sridevi high school’s governing council was obliged to object to the running of the unauthorized high school in Punacha. The students of this high school were neither eligible to get any government benefits, nor able to appear for the common entrance test being conducted by the government, he added.

Manila Krishna Shastri and Manila Mahadev Shastri were present at the press conference.
