Brahmavar: Farmers in doldrums as ash gourd price hits new low

Daijiworld Media Network - Brahmavar (SP)

Brahmavar, Jan 30: A team of farmers had come together and grown ash gourds in a ten acre field within Kody Kanyana gram panchayat limits near Kota. Now the crop is ready to be harvested but because the market for ash gourds is not favourable now, the farmers are facing a tricky situation.

Krishna Poojary, Vishwanath Poojary, Shekhar Marakala, and Raju Poojary have grown ash gourds in ten acres of land. Because of untimely rain and also because the veins were afflicted by the yellowing disease, the crops this time have not been encouraging. But they have been finding it hard to get a market for their produce. At the same time, the price has been unreasonably low.

Once the ash gourd is ready to be harvested, it cannot be left in the fields for long as they get damaged and begin to rot. Several of the ash gourds have already suffered damages. In the market, the price of ash gourd now is ten rupees a kilogram, but the middlemen have been offering a price of three rupees per kilogram. If they sell at this price, the young farmers will not be getting anything in return for the hard work done by them. These farmers have urged the government to buy the crop at minimum support price.

The ten acre field in Kody Kanyana has about 40 tonnes of ash gourd. Krishna Poojary says that he and his friends have been growing ash gourd or watermelon every year in this field and this time they opted to grow ash gourd. Because of climatic conditions and changed environment, the crop is less and the price it commands have disheartened them.

Bhuvaneshwari, duty director of horticulture, Udupi, has suggested them to try direct marketing. Alternatively, she has suggested trying through HOPCOMS. The district does not have a huge storage facility.

In the above write up, the news isn't the plight of farmers OR is it about, investment in stock market.

Investment in stock market will take place, only when one will have savings.

Some have suggested to prepare Halwa here. Of course it is a good idea.

Price going to bottom is a common phenomenon when crop is about to harvest. Growers ask the market players the rate for his product. These growers while purchasing manure etc from market also ask the rate. When he will fix his produce his rate ??? No chance. As long as this continues their struggle has no end. Really sorry as I have personal experience

It is strange that when yield is down due to inclement weather price is also subdued. Reverse should have been the case.

I am discouraged to know that hard working farmers from my native neighborhood are facing unexpected problems in distributing ash gourds to the local markets. Coastal Karnataka is known for many temples, mutts which provide noon vegetarian meals; also more than one and half lakh hotels in two major cities; Bangalore and Bombay are owned by South Kanaraites. Therefore Muths, Temples, Hotel Owners and local population can help farmers in their needs by purchasing farm product at fair prices and by eliminating middle man (dallals). Elected State Legislators of twin districts could work more closely with daily toiling farmers.

State Government must act swiftly. All Ash gourd must buy and give to Cow ashrams/orphanages. So farmers will be paid and cows will be happy too.

The second opinion as our BJP is very close with Ambani [Reliance Group] they can ask him to export Ash Gourd to other countries.

Being an Indian Citizen, I gave my suggestions but it is left to the authorities to accept.

Some entrepreneurs or local groups should find a way out to make mass scale Halwa from this. HALWA from ash gaurd is by far the best and most expensive to buy also. It may help the local farmers. Due to religious beliefs the use of Ash gaurd in daily diet is limited although scientifically this is supposed to be one of the most nutritious and healthy vegitable.

SB.mangalore idea of making Halwa is good .Problem is with this amount of ash pumpkins is pretty heavy work and too much. Why can ask some party arrangers for marriage ,fest etc. They need a big amount ,even Temples.Give them with some reduced price ,instead of spoiling .As far as I know it doesnt spoil even a year,if stored it in warm place .
