Mangaluru, Mar 16: A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, here, on March 13 held a National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme seminar at its premises in association with the district branch of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

Identifying tuberculosis and treating it has remained a challenge even now. Though there is awareness of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis insect for the last 135 years and suitable medicines are available everywhere, nearly 28 lac patients suffer due to the disease in our country every year. 4.5 lac patients in the country lose their lives due to TB per year.

Lack of facilities to identify the disease and patients failing to take the medicines for the full course, between six to eight months are some of the causes.

The union ministry of health released new guidelines to identify the disease and to provide effective treatment. The disease is separated into three groups for the purpose. Those are:

Pulmonary TB

Extra Pulmonary and

Drug-Resistant TB

The disease can be identified among adults and children with TB symptoms in preliminary stages by modern CBNAAT tests. This most suitable test can be used at all the district health centres in the country free of charge.
