Mangaluru, Apr 13: One can see haphazardly spread out wires which look like cobwebs and are scattered on or hanging from footpaths, electric poles, roadsides, buildings, trees etc. After the cables are used for connecting, the remaining bundles of wire are seen to have been left to hang from poles or trees. Sometimes these cables fall down and pose danger for the pedestrians who might get entangled in the cables and trip to the road. Sometimes, such sudden falls can be lethal, and these cables can also get tightened arouind our necks and work as nooses, posing grave danger to our lives.
There are cables belonging to television networks, mobile phones, and internet cables, telephone wires etc among others. These cables are not confined to ploles alone, they can be seen everywhere on the roads and footplaths. They look so odd and unsightly that they damage the look of the city.
In places like car street, Bunder, Mannagudda, Kadri etc. the poles also have high tension cables in addition to normal power lines. All these polls also have bundles of cables hung from them unnecessarily. If any repair work is needed to be performed on such poles, it will be a challenging job for the linemen. Chances of accidents cannot be ruled out. In emergency situations, these cables thwart people from quickly going up and can obstruct people from getting down easily. Problems of linemen get compunded during monsoon months.
CCTV cables are laid by using electric poles. At many places, heaps of such wires have been lying scattered on pedetrian routes, under trees etc. Those who walk on the footpaths have to brush against these thick bundles and they can also take away lives of two-wheeler riders. At night, the danger is more as they cannot be seen.
As far as CCTV is concerned, the very network of CCTV camers look unscientific. For example, the wires from State Bank to Ambedkar Circle are tied to electric ploles. These cables which are low in height can be cut by any man of average height. In such cases, evidences might be destroyed. People are of the opinion that it would have been better if the cables are buried on the dividers instead of tying to poles, as it might also give a decent look to the city.
There is no provision to lay cables at will and in such a way so as to endanger the lives of the people. But the city corporation officials do not take action against the violators and hence these cables are spread out in a shoddy way. Police department has to think of fixing their CCTV wires in a systematic manner.
City corporation commissioner, Akshy Sridhar, said that the problem has arisen mainly because the MESCOM has allowed these cables to be tied to their poles. He said that the coproraiton has taken up the matter with the concerned. He said that if the cables are posing serious problems to the people , they will be cut by the city corporation.
