Mangalore: When help comes Unasked for...

Mangalore: When help comes Unasked for...

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 18 : Just the other day I was passing through the Bejai down the circuit house road where concreting of the road is going on at around 8 pm.    Suddenly I saw a group of men trying to push down a jeep which had climbed the median and was precariously placed in that narrow concrete road. It was pitch dark and the driver, a slightly old man was nervous and could not muster courage to pull it down the high median for the fear of hitting other vehicles parked on the side of the road.  Looking at the plight one of the men gathered  asked the owner to get down and took over the seat to bring down the  vehicle safely much to the joy of all those who had gathered and were rendering their help to push the vehicle come down safely.

The jeep owner who had come from some other part of Karnataka had climbed the median in the narrow road when a city bus had failed to give him enough space to move on.  The people who had gathered there were public, some of them pedestrians, some two—wheeler drivers and also auto drivers.  They did not know the man who was struggling to extricate his vehicle from the mess he had found himself in. But  they ran to his rescue, parking their vehicles aside and forgetting about their personal work.  Once the job was done and the vehicle was brought down safely, with the help of the public assembled , the man thanked them profusely and drew away  with a smiling face.

In the last few years Mangalore  has been making  international headlines  for all the wrong reasons  and traits like the helping nature of the people of the coastal districts, something unique in this part of the land,  often goes unnoticed.  Most Mangaloreans must have benefitted in one way or the other from this benign and helping nature and the largesse of fellow Mangaloreans,  whose timely help and goodness must have helped them in times of emergencies.   Be it a vehicle turning turtle, an accident or a two wheeler  driver falling into a pot hole and struggling to come out or any other problems they face in public places,  there are good Samaritans who appear from nowhere, giving a helping hand,  at a time when it is needed the most.

Recalls Prabhakar K, a marketing executive who had met with an accident 2 years back near Mallikatta.  His bike collided with Bullet at about 9.30 pm and his knee was fractured.  Even that late people had gathered and  had called for an ambulance as he told them he cant travel in the auto as his knee was broken and got  him admitted to a local hospital personally and also informed his family.  “I was unconscious for sometime as I did not know what had happened.  I drank some water that someone gave and when they tried to lift me I had realized my knee was fractured and told them to arrange an ambulance.  Many people who gathered  around me waited till the ambulance arrived and one of them came to the hospital along.  I really cannot forget their timely help”, Prabhakar recounts.

“This helping nature of Mangaloreans in times of emergencies is something unique and people often go out of the way to render help”, says Praveen D Souza,  a sales executive, l who has been a beneficiary of the timely help he had received when he had fallen  from his two-wheeler  after a lorry  had hit the side mirror of his bike while trying to avoid a pothole.  “The auto which was just behind me stopped and the driver came rushing to me.  Even people who were sitting in the auto lifted my vehicle as my leg was caught under the bike”, Praveen narrates.

Just two days back another acquaintance of mine,  Chandrahas Suvarna, a contractor,  who went home for lunch,  left his food halfway through when his  neighbours came running requesting to drive the pregnant lady to the hospital who had developed labour pains unexpectedly.  He drew the woman to the hospital  with two other ladies accompanying her and stayed back till her husband  came from his office as there were only two ladies who were not confident of handling the situation in  case some help was needed. “It was an emergency and it is my duty to help in whatever way I could.  I have my work everyday  but emergencies like this crop up occasionally.  We cannot be so blind to the emergency needs of people and think only about the material gains.  Money comes and goes but the help given will always remain entrenched in the minds of beneficiaries.  More than that it has given me the satisfaction of being able to help someone in need ”, explains  Chandrahas.

There are myriad incidents of this nature which have brought to the fore the genuineness of the people of these coastal region.  One cannot forget the sacrifice of the people who lost their lives when they tried to rescue the children in the boat tragedy in Pilikula,  a few years back.  People present around there responded spontaneously in  a sudden reaction to reach out to the children, which made these good Samaritans to jump into the water without bothering  about the safety of their own lives.  And who can forget the timely and immediate response of Mangaloreans during the recent air crash tragedy?  Remember people who had assembled near the mobile tower when the lady had climbed its top to draw attention of the authorities to seek justice?   Many of them might have been curious onlookers but there were people who were genuine and who were genuinely concerned about her  safety.

With potholes galore in our ever problematic roads, the only solace we can have is the genuine help that is available in case (touchwood) something goes awry while driving.

Mangalore is inhabited by good people, who are kind and helpful, service minded and who never hesitate risking their own lives when the situation calls for. While helping out they don’t see the caste, creed or religion of the person who needs the help.  It is just the human being that matters.   In bigger cities when people hardly care for others or their own neighbors, it is indeed our good fortune to see the humaneness alive and bountiful among our people.  We have to thank our stars as we are still untouched by that wave of indifference and lack of concern for the fellow human being, common in metro cities.

Mr Shanker please note that Media has the duty to report what is true even if it degrades the city or the country. Truth is truth.
Let me give a incident where I saw a aged man on the side of the road bleeding. Immediately called a Ambulance from nearby hospital, paid Rs.300 as his fees and sent the person to Wenlock Hospital. Within an hour a well built man showed up at my door to confront me,as to why I sent the injured man to Wenlock Hospital. I should have admitted the injured person to some Private Hospital. He was demanding that patient should be removed from Wenlock and admitt to City Hospital. I had more than 4 incident to relate of being Good Samaritan in Mangalore. It costed not only large amount of money but it pushed me to thinking why I did it. Sorry to say that.

I agree with most of the comments, Mangalore is blessed with people of large heart, hardly there is an exception. I do not like people blaming media. When bad things happen for few individuals greed, media should report it. Why media should hide the truth and show only good things. When bad events gets publicity similar to good things, culprits get ashamed and there is a chance crimes will be minimized for the fear of being highlighted

i still remember two years back in sep when this church riots were going on in mangalore we all were standing in front of bejai church at night and suddenly a car climed over the divider.we went towards the car and the people in it were so sacred to see us all coming thier way. weunderstood they were of other religion and we told them we wont hurt u irrespective of what is happeningto our church and we bought the car down and they were so proud and happyand told us that even going through such pain because of the damages done to the church we had the courtesy to help people in need. so this is what true mangaloreans are made of ,even if they are in need and they see someone else suffering they feel its imp to help the other person. hats off to the true mangaloreans.

I had similar experience the other day in Katapady, I parked the Toyota Innova on the roadside, while moving out, one of the front wheel got stuck in the ditch, as I underestimated the depth of the same.
Immediately a couple of people gathered & helped me in lifing the car up & I could drive out easily.
It was a great moment of joy for me, otherwise it would have been a big hassle, to arrange a towing vehicle to tow my car out.
Still there is a large no of good people in our native.

I have personally experienced the true spirit of kindness of our dear Mangaloreans when I was in Mangalore. When my Zeep broke down and I did not know what to do next, suddenly two people(unknown To me)came to my help. They made all possible arrangements to repair the Zeep.I can never forget those kind hearted people. When I met with a major accident, a group of people rushed me to Fr. Muller's hospital where I underwent a major surgery on my crushed right leg. I always remember them and pray for them. My dear Mangaloreans let us involve ourselves in such kind acts to the needy people irrespective of our relegion, creed etc. This should be the real spirit of any Religion. Let us give up our communal hatred and live in peace and harmony. Thank you Florine for your wonderful article and thank you dear good samaritans for helping the helpless driver. May God bless you abundantly.

In this world or selfishness and greed, I feel blessed that there are good people left who whole heartedly come forward to help..without any expectations. My father-in-law had a fall from a bus and was hurt on his head, when returning home from another town, a couple of years ago.
I am thankful to that good samaritan bus conductor who took him to a nearby clinic, got his wound dressed and sent him home in an autorickshaw.

I love Mangalore compared to any other place. It really feels like your own home whenever u go there.
Its best shown in the pic. People are not even bothered that the soil is mushy or if its raining. One person is holding an umbrella in one hand and still pushing the car. They look so happy to help the person in the car. Even whenever i fly down everytime to Mlore, the porters come running to help. Some ppl shoe them away thinking they will ask for extra money, but i have seen porters who even refused to take money and still help you.
I have friends who tell "oh you’re from Mangalore where the Pub attack took place or where the crash happened or where the Shiv sena always attacks". They refer to Mlore like this. And this is just because of the Media hype always, the way they potray our place in the media. The movie Peepli Live is a perfect example for this and every media person should watch this movie.
I travelled in rush buses to school / college for almost 15 yrs in Mlore but never felt scared to stand in the last footstep when the bus was full because they were some boys who would hang almost outside the bus on the last step and protect you. I had neighbours who would give food / old clothes to the labourers doing any construction work outside their house. Definitely MANGALORE IS THE BEST AND I AM PROUD TO BE A MANGALOREAN. I simply love this article…Thank you Florine..Keep writing more like this..

Good or bad nominate Mangalore boz it has got its own charm,This is Gods own City. The greenery/the gloom of air which we inhale..The beauty of nature, differnt relgious/all these things when compared the above probelm is very minor,God has blessed to be part of mlore but not of somalia where people struggle for food and water/nor a part of any other country where they lack relationship/festivals/Bounding.
Mangalore nowadays is in news due to many bad activites but sure this small city will stand high when the econmy starts to thrive and floursih as people are not aware all these problems are influenced due to some political grounds.God bless My Mangalore..Proud to be a Mangalorean..Mwhaaaaaa

The article gives a correct picture of Mangalore. The people there are very honest and helpful. Whether you ask for it or not there are many who are willing to help when you are in trouble. The only black spot on this great city is the auto drivers who exhort money from the passengers but I feel this is restricted to only the railway station and KSRTC bus stop. Otherwise this is a perfect city or should I say paradise on earth. I just hope that I will get a transfer back to Mangalore.
