Udupi, Sep 6: A leopard which was chasing a pet dog accidentally fell into an open well in Soodapalli gram panchayat, near Shirva, on the night of Saturday September 4. Locals and forest personnel managed to rescue both the leopard and the pet dog at around 3 pm on Sunday September 5.

A hungry leopard from the nearby forest had ventured onto the property of Poovappa Sapaliga, residing at Soodapalli, in search of prey. As it tried to flee with the pet dog, both fell in a well on the property.

The Sapaliga family while searching for their pet dog on Sunday morning found both animals in the well, exhausted from swimming in the water.  The locals informed the forest department and the officials arrived with cages to be lowered into the well. They then rescued both the animals with the help of local youth.

The forest personnel transported the leopard to the National Reserve Forest at Kudremukh where it was set free. The dog was returned to its master.

Beautiful pictures, good job, degradation of forests make wild animals to come to villages to search food and fall into dangerous situations, such as this and the other made J.H Kinngolli to kill two pythons with riffle, some time back a female leopard traped in the net etc.

It was awesome.. Nice pics from Wilfy as well. Thanx to DW for taking this worldwide. Slight relief for the villagers but leopard's never live alone, there may be more..!! So, waiting for the next..! since, unfortunately Poovappa family is still not able to built a compound wall for their well. Some kind hearted people must approach for this cause.

Quite sometime back there was lot of hue and cry for missing pets in my neighbourhood in and arround the village Sooda/koraje/Palli.Even our own pet was killed and the half eaten body was left close to my residence.
Every one was assuming it could be a "Big Cat". Finally it's not.
Thanks to my good neighbour Mr.Wilfred Castelino for the Nice pictures and aso thanking Daijiworld & his team (Mr. Walter) my good old friend & college mate in St. Mary's Shirva.

Beautiful pictures. How the ferocious Leapard's psychology
was changed when it went down
    and terrified! Now the Leopard
does't want to kill the dog, but
    afraid for its own life.

In human beings also, when we have
nothing to fear, we may have a
wild tendency to jump on the weaker
sections of the society. A great
lesson to learn from the picture.

Thankyou Daijiworld for your excellent photography. It reminds of an old similar incident which took place 45yrs ago. When you go from shriva to Pillar from the main road before thunduballe turn one Mr.Kala had dug a well without boundary. The leopard which chased his dog as prey fell in the well. The leopard was shot dead and removed then.I appreciate the present locals for respecting the wildlife and protecting them with latest methods. Hats off once more to the younger generation for providing protection to the animals.

I am surprised that there are Leopards around. With all the rampant hunting, this Leopard (endangered species ??) had to go after domestic prey rather than it's natural prey in the forest. Morever, it had to come into an urban area as likely there was no prey in the forest.

Hope the local people realise what a marvellous and rare creature the Leopard is and propagate it's species by any means.

Wonderful pictures. Should be distrubuted nationally !!

Only recently there were 2 huge pythons (more than 15 feet) (actually they were a pair) in my compound, near Kinnigoli. My worker and I did not know what to do. When we called Pilikula, they told us to catch the pythons and dump them in the forest elsewhere, as it was in late in the evening and raining, and they did not have transportation to come so far from mangalore.

What to do, we killed both the pythons with Rifle, as they would be a threat to our chickens.

I still feel bad about this, but no one was willing to carry these pythons and throw them near someone else's compound. Now if the forest officials came to know about this, they might have troubled me for bribe etc, but then i was left to do the only practical thing and that was to kill the pythons.

Good pictures. I am happy that both animals are safely rescued. Happy life to them.

Some concerns I have is that it is high time that people fence their open wells. Protection must be given not only for people but also for animals either domestic or wild. It is our fundamental duty.

Karnataka has witnessed around 4-6 cases where children fell into dead borewells. Still there is no government order that directs people to close dead tube-wells. We have no account of how many animals fell in these tube wells and dead.

So it is high time we become more responsible.

Have a great with safe wells.

Very GOOD job by authorities and by LOCAL youths. It should be a good model and practise in our daily life when it comes other issue. When some people make some mistakes let every one try to rescue them from evil. Let us not through stone or put OIL in to the fire. It is a good job showing courage and mercy to a animal but why we are behind to show the greater mercy and affection to human being. We all must remember that for every problem there is solution if we think and we must adopt the right and the best solution to solve the problem.

    Folks,

Leopard might very well come back to Pilarkhan reserve forest(near Sooda-where it was captured) for a family reunion from Kudremukh reseve forest Via Karkala-Nitte-Nandalike-Belman route....

So folks be careful....., it has learnt its lesson, next time it is unlikely to enter the cage again...unless some shrewed politicians convince it....
