I'm a Brahmin, Don't Tell Me about Cow Protection: Karnataka Governor

Bangalore, Sep 12 (IANS): In a rare instance of a constitutional authority referring to his caste to hit back at critics, Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj Sunday told the state's BJP government that he was Brahmin and didn't need to be told about cow protection.

"I am a Brahmin. I need not learn from anybody about cow protection," Bhardwaj said, slamming Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers attacking him for not giving his assent to a bill banning cow slaughter and forwarding it to President Pratibha Patil for a decision.

Several ministers and state BJP chief K.S. Eshwarappa have been criticising Bhardwaj for not assenting to the bill and had organised a state-wide demonstration last week to press Patil for early nod to the legislation.

Bhardwaj also took exception to BJP ministers attacking him for rejecting the government's recommendation to release a group of criminals on the basis of their good conduct.

"Ministers are giving many statements (against me). This is gross indiscipline. I don't like this," the governor told reporters here.

"I am not an outsider. I am the head of this government. It is my duty to see this government functions according to the constitution," he said referring to the anti-cow slaughter bill.

"If there is no problem I give assent. If there is a problem it is referred to the president. There is no shortcut when it comes to constitutional matters. If they want shortcut, I will not allow it," Bhardwaj asserted.

On the release of convicts for good conduct, he said: "I cannot function arbitrarily. How can criminals pressurize the governor?"

The government had recommended release of around 590 life convicts across the state on the occasion of Independence Day on the ground of good conduct. They had gone on hunger strike after the governor did not agree to their release.

Bhardwaj had rejected the recommendation citing several court judgements on the issue of release of life convicts.

"Do you want the governor to get strictures from the court?"

State Prisons and Horticulture Minister Umesh Katti, criticizing the governor for not accepting the recommendation, has been saying that the government will approach the president, which has angered Bhardwaj.

Thomas Calicut, my comments with regard to C K DAYANANDA, MANGALURU and Mr. Dayanada's agreement with my comments are self explanatory. Mr. Dayananda’s clarification about Dharma with solution itself evident the depth of knowledge and his acceptance of limitations and weakness in one’s community itself shows his goodness.

With regard to Kerala Christians having 5 caste and they are fighting among themselves is shameful, disgusting. I do agree Christians do have caste, tribe etc problems.

For me I will change my outlook and respect & accept my next neighbour as like own brother. Better to respect what u are rather than who u are. I can change myself and for others I can set example. Hope this may help u.

    Dear Shri D'Cunha,

I totally agree with your definition of a Brahmin. But the present social structure considers the Brahmin as a community. The bad elements in the society are trying to destroy Hinduism by suppressing this community which has stood for generations as a foundation to Hinduism. For these elements I wanted show the sacrifices made by the Brahmins.

Whether this suits me or not is a different thing. You are free to express your opinion.

More than sharing our assets/income, we should share our knowledge. Because earning assets/income is easier than earning the knowledge. This is the true spirit of Sanatana Dharma.

Yes, I am a member of Brahmin community. My family has unbroken lineage to the ancient sage Vashishta. In this tradition, I will contribute my share at the service of Dharma.

We together should work to bring back the past glory of this country for the welfare of the world.

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishada (VI.4.18) advises a couple to take an evening meal of beef or veal pulao, if they desire to beget a son who is learned in the Vedas
In verse III.1.2.21 in the Satapatha Brahmana, sage Yajnavalkaya asserts that even though the cow is the supporter of everyone, he would eat beef “if it is luscious.” At IV.5-2.1 in the same Brahmana, it is said that a barren cow can be slaughtered in the Some sacrifice. Not only for religious purposes, but also for other purposes one could kill a cow and eat beef. Thus at II.4.2 of the same Brahmana, it is suggested that a fat bull or fat goat should be sacrificed in honour of an important guest.
In which regious says cow slaughter is restricted.

Dear C K DAYANANDA, MANGALURU. Your comments about brahmin itself is unclear, contradictory.
1 ".There is no upper caste or lower caste in Hinduism. Brahmin means a gentleman who taught Dharma [way of life] to the society". As far as I was taught by my hindu Iscon freinds that anybody who share/teach knowledge is brahmain. Teachers, mothers are the true example. In this role there is no caste, tribe etc. This is Sanatana Dharma.
2."Just open your eyes see our history. Majority of those who sacrificed for this country are Brahmins". Here in reference to above where there is no caste, still u mention about caste becasue this suits u. Definitely u are also by caste brahmin.
Please share your assets/ income with the less priviledged members of your community instead of go on accumulating. This is real Dharma. God bless India. Jai Hind.

Why no ban on the Rowdies who love to stare at the gals and make the gals feel weird? where is the stop for all this? any answer to such questions? person who rapes n kills a gal is roaming outside on the street to hunt for another gal and person who kills cow is killed to death! is this justice.Justify where is our country heading towards ?

    Dear Shri Abhishek,

There is no upper caste or lower caste in Hinduism. Brahmin means a gentleman who taught Dharma [way of life] to the society. Brahminism is the foundation of Sanathana Dharma and because of this community the Sanathana Dharma has survived and continue to survive in this country. All the foreign invaders tried to silence this community to eradicate Sanathana Dharma, but they miserably failed.

Just open your eyes see our history. Majority of those who sacrificed for this country are Brahmins.

We will continue to fight Adharma and will not stop until Dharma is once again established in this country.

    Friends read this article...
Banning Horse Meat was a mistake !!

I grew up on a farm with all kinds of animals and as anyone who has lived on a REAL farm can tell you waste is a sin. Cows make milk, when they no longer do they become meat. Chickens make eggs, when they no longer do they become meat. When horses can no longer support a saddle and rider they became meat. Now we loved our horses, they lived a good long life for a horse about 20 years, but %&*$# is part of the cycle of life. When my first horse went for slaughter, I was sad but My grandfather made me understand that it was a part of life and we always make the best of life and %&*$# of an animal.

Because like it or not a horse is still an animal, NOT a pet. Horses do not live inside your house and you do not carry them around on your lap. And guess what euthanization is still %&*$#. I will bet that most people who are anti horse meat are vegetarians in general, and every one I have met is as wastefull of a human being as I have met. Most anti slaughter people are ignorant to every part of horse ownership, they think horse life is like a carnival horsey ride. NO horses, eat a lot, require shelter, require medicine and vet care. And the older they get the more they cost. And I am sick and tired about hearing about how greusome slaughter is...guess what ALL slaughter has blood and %&*$#. There is nothing wrong with old horses being slaughtered for meat...

Now the Goveror has admitted clandistinely that brahmins are the one who have been oppressing people for ages and misleading the people in the matter of cow s its holy and motherly, when the fact is that cow is for human use for both milk and food. Beef irrespectivce of ban shall remain popular delicacy amongst all sections of the society including the brhamins. These days tender beef is not available. Only old beef is available which takes long time to cook because only old and aged cows that cant give milk and cat reproduce are being sold to the slaughter houses. All parties & Politicians are the same in India. Every politician & Party has vested interests & they will do so as desired. They have the power to make a law where & when they deem fit. If it is in their interest, they can make a beffitting law, else they can say it is law & cannot be done. All political parties are doing best what the britishers taught us, divide & rule. So basically it doesnt matter if it is BJP, Congress, SP, JP, BSP, or communists. They all make their hay when the sun shines on them. As for us citizens we work to earn our living, many of us dont bother to vote as we really dont have a choice, all options we have are the same when they come to power. we pay our taxes, and dont bother to know where the money is being spent, also no point trying to waste our time finding where it is and whose pocket it is going to. The entire country is divided in terms of caste, religion, forward/backward etc etc. our country will be number 1 in this world the day we stop worrying about caste, creed, religion, basically to say the day we all stand united as Indians. The day we all feel, we are human beings and we are Indians, the rest that i follow or believe in is my personal life at home, that day no country will be able to match us or stand upto us. Until then we will be shattered, scattered and fighting each other.

Main issue here is if the bill for Cow Slaughter Ban has been done by taking all the things into consideration or it is done only to appease Hindus. First look at the bill gives the impression that no proper homework has been done by this BJP government. BJP government has to make clear of the following points before this bill becomes a law:

1 This is one of the important food for Dalits, some Hindus, Christians and Muslims and if the Cow slaughter is banned what will be the alternate food for these people at the same price. If they change to either vegetarian or other non vegetarian food what will happen to the food cycle and whether government is ready for the change in the food cycle balance.

2)Whether government is ready for the rehabilitation of old cows? How the farmer can feed the old cows? Does the government have enough resources(in terms of cultivating additional grass) to feed these cows? If additional grass is to be grown then whether it affects the cultivation of the food for human beings?

3)Cow slaughter ban is against nature as the creatures are supposed to feed on each other. Any reversal of this cycle will do serious harm to the nature.

Governor was right when he referred this issue to the President. Instead of supporting this bill blindly, we have to analyse the pros and cons such that the bill should not lead to detrimental to human beings.

Mr. Mallar, when you return to Kasargod next time, please look around and inquire how rich Brahmins from Kasargod purchase huge land masses in Karnataka and develop rubber plantations. Well, that is not at all a problem but when a cow of near by villager trespasses into their plantations, the same animal that is worshiped is gunned down mercilessly. This is a reality I saw myself not a story. The police who arrive at the site are greased in advance hence they advise locals to restrict the cattle to huts. If at all the law is to come to force, I will purposely drive old cattle into these plantations and wait to see how the animal gets the justice.

Surprising thing is in Mysore Zoo, you can sponsor for look after of any animals for maximum 1 year and your name is displayed on board. There is one Tiger sponsored by our CM - Yediyurappa (name is displayed near the cage) also given 14 Kgs of BEEF meat 2 Kg Chicken everyday except Tuesday

This is what BJP Govt is doing, and just for diverting public attention they are asking for Cow slaughter ban. So funny these people are. All the employees of Mysore Zoo says, if Govt bans the cow meat, then it is difficult to run the Zoo since Mutton is very costly, and they might close this zoo.

Cows slautered all over the world and meat is eaten by 75 percent of population if not more. If you stop cow slaughter, all other meat prices will sky rocket.and people have to keep cows at home and worship them.

The BJP is a Brahmin dominated
    party and adamant to establish
    an anti-cow slaughter law in
    Karnataka. The Governor is simply
stating the fact that, since he
is a Brahmin by birth, nobody needs
to give him any lesson about that
    particular subject of cow-slaughter
    as a religious issue.

The other point is with regard
    to the constitutional implications
of the issue. Since he was a former
law Minister of India, and knows
the Indian constitution to the core
so that nobody needs to teach him
    that particular subject. His
    statement is plain and self-explanatory.

I completely agree with the Governor's stand and I am glad that Karnataka state has Mr. Bharadwaj as the Governor.

Similar kind of situation I faced when I was leading a small association and I had to stand firm on certain rules and principles(ofcourse there isn't any constitution.!!) which Iam really proud of.Hats off to Mr. Bhardwaj.

Mr.Bharadwaj...what if yor are a brahmin...even I am.Whats big in it.First change your mean mentality for thinking brahmin being superior. This is what not taught in congress. You are aginst congress, because they say all are equal.Having this tradition and thinking in this modern era is nothing but a forecasted serious impact on the developement and growth of India. You are not fit for the seat of the governer.

People are being deprived of their livelihood across the Karnataka. The State treasury is being looted by one and all though there is no enough money for paying salaries and buying coal to generate power at Raichur plants. The govt is up to making fools out of the people by diverting their attention to stupid law like anti-cow slaughter. Unfortunately it is Hindus who sell cows for slaughter most times.

HE Governor of Karnataka doing right job according to the constitution of India, he was the Law Minister in Central Cabinet, he knows the constitutions and laws more then any other minster in Karnataka State Cabinet. Therefore, no need to teach him law, reg. Cow Slaughter Bill, he is right he is Brahmin and knows well whats the meaning of Cow Protection... So pls repect the Governor and his chair & as well as his personality, if we respect governor means respecting constitution of India, and will get respect from all. If we disrespect Governor means we indirectly disrespecting ourselves , our government & our Party. Party's Lawmakers are the face of Party. Don't disregard your own party by giving these statements

Not that I am a flag bearer for anyone, but its good that the Governor is asserting his rights against some of the bad policies of the government.
Release life convicts? 560 of them?

If I remember correctly, was not this Governor formerly the Union Law Minister?

Atleast, we have 1 Governor who is not afraid to call a spade a spade. It also disheartening to note that ministers in this BJP government are not aware of the Indian constitution. Picking on the governor of the state is a cheap act by these "two penny worth" inexperienced politicians.

The Karnataka government appears to be showing its 'rear side' to the Indian constitution and is busy implementing its own constitution, drafted by rss.

We have to appreciate the stand taken by the Governor. In fact no one can dictate terms to the highest authority of the state in matter of consitution and discipline when one knows that the governor is acting RIGHT from his part. If it is BJP's wish to divert attention from one matter to the another, then, let it know that it cannot be "all right" at "all times".

Well said Karnataka Governor Mr. Bhardwaj. Still this momemt I was under the impression that Mr. Bhardwaj was non brahmin. Infact it proved wrong and a brahmin knows how to protect cows. The question is hunger vs food, debt vs economy ,liability vs asset.
The rule of the exception is human being.
Second important point of releasing 590 life convicts across the state on the occasion of Independence Day is a wise game traping our honest Karnataka Governor. If he releases them, then the love letter he will receive from the court. If not, the BJP chelas music by organising hartals. Releasing 590 life convicts shows BJP's hidden agenda of using these criminals for their political gains.

    Yeddy,

Best thing for you to do is make governor to read a speech in next joint session of assembly detailing all his commissions and Ommissions,,,,

Since Cabinet prepares and approves that specch, and he just reads it in joint session of assembly without right to make any changes...Make him to read he was wrong in all these issues...Only option with him is then, either read the speech criticizing himself or resign...lets see what this so called constitutional pundit does!!!

Kudos to Governor Bhardwaj for his blunt talk. Nobody demands that milk-giving & useful cows, or any other cattle useful for agriculture or transport should be killed. But why make a hue & cry over protecting aged, useless animals, which cannot be fed by poor farmers. There should not be any restriction on killing such animals.

Also, what is the Yeddy regime's hurry in releasing 593 convicted prisoners without following the prescribed procedures & ascertaining that such acts do not harm society?

The Governor should not yield to this type of pressure tactics.
