Mangaluru, Aug 18: Leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal cremated the couple, who had ended their lives in fear of being infected by Covid, according to their last wish, at the Nandigudda Crematorium here on Tuesday August 17.
The couple on Tuesday August 17 early morning, had sent a voice messages to police commissioner N Shashi Kumar about anxiety over the news items regarding Covid transmitted by the media and hence ending their lives. The police commissioner immediately had requested them not to take any hasty steps and also tried to find the couple. Meanwhile, police who located the apartment at Baikampady, found that the couple had already ended their lives.
VHP divisional secretary Sharan Pumpwell, who was present at the cremation, termed as tragic the decision of a couple to end lives together because of the suspicion about having contracted coronavirus infection.
Sharan said that the couple had, in the death note that they had left behind, expressed their desire for their funeral to be performed as per Hindu traditions. "In tune with their wishes, we have performed their funeral at Nandigudda graveyard along with their relatives and VHP activists. We plead with the people not to lose heart and take hasty decisions. Covid 19 can be treated and we have medicines for the disease. Vaccination centres have been working to vaccinate everyone. No one should lose hope. They are advised to visit the nearby hospitals or health centres for treatment," he said.
