Bengaluru, Aug 18: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has allowed those students who have secured engineering degree to pursue engineering degree in some other subject (second degree). The aim of this additional provision is to help the students to expand their realm of knowledge and bag lucrative employment.

All the technological universities and educational institutions have been instructed to allow lateral entry to students willing to pursue a second engineering degree course to the third or fifth semesters.

Several subjects offered in engineering degree are supplementary to one another. The students have to choose any one of the branches offered. For example, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, manufacturing engineering and automobile engineering subjects are supplemental to each other while electrical and electronics, civil and environmental engineering, computer science and information science have similarities. The students pursuing the second degree will have to choose one of the subjects that are supplemental to the subjects they have already studied.

Dr Karisiddappa, vice chancellor of Vishveshwaraya Technological University, said that rules relating to the selection of students, admission, syllabus etc are yet to be framed and therefore admissions will be started in the academic year 2022-23. Prof K R Venugopal, vice chancellor of Bangalore University, appreciated AICTE for making this provision as it helps students to expand their knowledge, hone engineering skills and improve chances in the employment market.
