Udupi, Sep 19: Signalling impending trouble for the district Congress, scores of party workers are said to be preparing to resign in protest over the appointment of new president of Udupi block Congress.

On Saturday September 18, CMC member Ramesh Kanchan was appointed president of Udupi block Congress. Soon after his appointment, dissent sprung from supporters of Krishnamurthy Acharya Kinnimulki, who was also in contention for the post. He along with his supporters have decided to resign from various party positions.

Krishnamurthy Acharya Kinnumulki happens to be the current president of Udupi Congress publicity cell. He has a good number of supporters among the youth in the party. Many of his supporters also head some of the youth wings of district Congress.

"Krishnamurthy Acharya has worked for the party for more than 18 years now. He was assured of the block president position by the leaders. He has also worked relentlessly during the Covid pandemic. We being his supporters have decided to resign from the party in protest," said a supporter on condition of anonymity.

Krishnamurthy Acharya's team had met KPCC president D K Shivakumar recently in Bengaluru. A meeting was held then, and a second round of discussion was held during Shivakumar's recent visit to Udupi and Mangaluru.

The office-bearers and members of DKS Abhimani Balaga, Rahul Brigade, a few of the block Congress presidents along with other key position holders inside the party who are in favour of Krishnamurthy Acharya Kinnumulki have now decided to resign from party.

Krishnamurthy Archarya has said that he will resign from the party and contest the next elections as an independent.

A final round of discussion among Acharya's supporters is expected to be held on Sunday September 19, and on Monday they will submit their resignations, sources said.

The appointment of the new Udupi block Congress president was made on September 7, but due to some issues, the announcement was made 10 days later.

Speaking to daijiworld, Krishnamurthy Acharya said, "We have worked for the party for more than 18 years. One who has lost the elections several times is now interfering. Over a thousand party workers including CMC coucillors will regsign from the party on Monday."
