Mangaluru: Union govt decides to close down Vamanjoor Doordarshan re-telecast centre

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 9: The only Doordarshan re-telecast center that was functioning from Vamanjoor on the outskirts of the city is going to stop functioning from the end of October.

The process of closing down 272 Doordarshan relay centers across the country, which are affiliated to the union government, is going on for the past five years as per the instructions of Prasar Bharati Board and Directorate of Doordarshan. Eleven centers were closed down in the month of August. Now the Vamanjoor relay center will down shutters at the end of October.

Re-telecast centers have lost their prominence due to DTH service of Doordarshan and also cable networks. Union government is saying that due to this situation they are closing down the relay centers. Those who use antennas to watch Doordarshan programmes will not be able to view the same in future.

Union government had decided to close down the first Doordarshan center in the state at Gulbarga a few months ago. This news information appeared in newspapers. As there was widespread opposition to this move of the union government, the decision was withdrawn.

Whether the coastal district people will fight for the survival of Doordarshan center of Mangaluru remains to be seen. Coastal districts are known to demand for Tulu language and other pro-religious and political protests. However, when it comes to infrastructure, except for saving Netravati river, no large scale protests have taken place in twin districts so far.

When Vijaya Bank, which was considered as the pride of coastal districts, was amalgamated with Bank of Baroda people of Tulunadu did not show any resistance. The same attitude of the people of Tulunadu region was evident when the international airport in the city was handed over to Adani group.

No protests related to hike of price of essentials including fuel are done in the twin districts. So it should be seen whether there will be any fight to save the only Doordarshan center left in the city.

Of course, shutting down of Mangaluru Doordarshan High Power Transmitter is policy decision of Prasar Bharati. Analog terrestrial transmission is totally outdated. People those who want the free television, they can freely switch over to Doordarshan's free DTH service DD Free Dish and enjoy with several TV channels as well as Radio channels. Equation between closing down of analog terrestrial transmitters with clubbing of Vijaya and Baroda bank or handing over something to Adam's is not comparatively stands good... There is no doubt that these analog transmitters are outdated. There are modern items with the technological update. But, these analog transmitters only helped to communicate during the natural calamities while all the modern communication links failed to address...

DTH is not completely free and comes with expensnes. The simple antenna with terrestrial network ia 100 percentage free and instrumentation cost negligible. Govt is supposed to keep such services active , even if its under loss.

Those old TV antennas are almost obsolete due to updated technology of DTH and Cable TV services. Therefore, the re-telecast centres are obsolete too. Doordarshan's channels are also available on YouTube. Hope everyone watch Doordarshan's channels to support its viewership rather than complaining the shutdown of re telecast centers or the channel by the Govt. Sorry for the jobs lost in this process. Hope they have been assigned for another job by the Govt.

The central government has continuously been ignoring Mangalore for all development activities, despite getting maximum votes. No new project announcement, only removal of existing development.

The dish Antena and receiver were being given free of cost for those who wanted install them to view the dooradashan channels. Now a days I don't think the latest models TVs are able to telecast antenna based telecast. The technology has become so obsolete, there is no point in continuing such telecast mode. Easy to critize all government decisions without understanding the reasons behind it.

Why close?????….This could be upgraded and modernized with new technology. But if the govt is against telecasting true facts then this is one lame reason to close down the whole set up. This centre may still be functioning even with outdated technology if BJP’s fake facts were being transmitted.

I think that's ok. Use that facility for some other project. Since there is an alternative for antennas. But these antenna televisions and old radio comes useful when they do not have working satellites remaining. At that time no direct to home nor cable tv??? I think such scenarios are impossible now???

At least DD was free to those using old antennas and who were not interested in availing cable TV services. Now such viewers will be compelled to connect with cable network. So henceforth nothing will be free.
