Holy Cross Brother Assaulted in Presence of TV Cameras

Holy Cross Brother Assaulted in Presence of TV Cameras

by Melwyn Pinto, Mangalore

Bangalore, Oct 26: In what can be termed as a gross violation of human rights, Holy Cross brother and vice-principal of Holy Cross School Whitefild, here was manhandled and assaulted by miscreants belonging to Jaya Karnataka Vedike in front of TV cameras on Saturday October 23.

The cause of the assault, according to the Vedike, was the alleged misconduct of Br Philip with girl students and use of ‘suggestive’ language.

The incident took place on Saturday when Br Philip was traveling to the city from his school. A group of four followed the bus in a Maruthi van and intercepted the bus near Big Bazar on Old Madras Road. According to Br Philip, they dragged him out of the bus and took him back to the school and beat him up on the way.

At the school, it is reported that a mob of 300 people and cameramen from several Kannada news channels were waiting for his arrival. As soon as the van reached the school, Br Philip was dragged to his office and beaten by the mob indiscriminately in the full presence of the cameras. To add to his misery, the inspector of Whitefield police station, B N Gopalakrishna also assaulted him, again in full view of the cameras.

Reportedly, the police were reluctant to even file a First Information Report (FIR). It is only when the pressure was brought from higher authorities that the station finally filed the FIR.

Br Philip is now recuperating in Vaidehi Hospital, Whitefild and is still under shock. He has suffered several bruises on his face and is finding it extremely difficult to talk and eat.

It is learnt that the conspiracy behind the whole incident is hatched by the parents of two 10th standard students of the School. One of them, in fact, runs a school nearby and yet has admitted his daughter to Holy Cross School.

Br Philip in his FIR has mentioned the name of M G Reddy who is the parent of one of the students. The FIR reads: “While going in the car M G Reddy and the three others even threatened to kill me if I take too much interest in the school. He also threatened that if I take too much interest in the property litigation and blocked the way, they will not spare me.”

The authorities of a temple that is coming up close to the school have been demanding a road through the school property for quite some time now. Br Philip, after he was appointed the superior of the Holy Cross School community, it is learnt, had not yielded to any such pressure tactics. The school sources said that this could be one of the reasons behind the assault on Br Philip.

What is intriguing the school authorities is the fact that the alleged ‘misconduct’ of Br Philip was not reported to the class teacher or the principal by the students and the matter was directly taken to the parents. Principal of Holy Cross School, Br Assis Simoes said, “It is extremely unlikely that Br Philip could have in anyway misbehaved or used any obscene language with students. Even if he did, it is the duty of the students to report the matter to the class teacher or the principal first. Nothing was reported to me or to the class teacher. The unruly mob has taken law into their hands and barged into the campus. Further, a police inspector, who is supposed to give protection, has grossly misused his powers. What is saddening is the fact that the same Inspector was the Chief Guest of a function in the school just recently.”

Clean record

Br Philip was the registrar of St Joseph’s College and warden of the hostel for the last three years. The College authorities, staff and students vouch for the clean record and high moral integrity of Br Philip. They have condemned the incident and demanded a probe. Principal of St Joseph’s College, Fr Ambrose Pinto, said, “One does not require great reasoning to understand that all the accusations against Br Philip are false and malicious. No one can take law into their hands and assault a person, in full presence of the media. Those who manhandled Br Philip and those behind the attack must be arrested immediately.”

I am an Alumni of St.Joseph’s college and I was a student and hosteller when brother Philip was Registrar for the college and warden for the hostel. I know Br.Philip very personally and highly regard him for his principled and moral life.
The attack on Br.Philip is totally politically motivated and where the selfish interests of the attackers are clearly pictured. It is a clear indication where the democracy and constitution of India is insulted to the fullest. While extend my full support to Br.Philip, I strongly believe that the offenders who take law into their hands should be dealt seriously according to TRUE constitution so that such barbarous incidents do not occur since it can be any one of us at the receiving end in the future as Br.Philip

And those who are quiet without supporting justice please understand that this may happen to you anytime if you do not raise your voice NOW

Br. Philip is a person who is highly talented in all the fields. He ia a man with true values. It is known to majority of the people who know him. There require no explanation for such a character. Wherever he was posted he has left a footprint which cannot be erased by anyone. He has worked in many co-educational schools, colleges and techincal institues and as a challenege I can assure you that you cant find any misconduct by such a great person. If you want to Judge any person spent atleast some time with the person and you can decide their nature. In case of Br. Philip also if you spend sometime with him you will know about his good nature. His way of approaching , affection, love , care, responsobility, and bundle of Good qualities all can be Judged in a few minutes. According to me he is one of the lovely God Chosen person to do the betterment of Individuals and society. Some Sanghas have targeted him and made him as a victim. Everything was pre planned to assault and to creat a scenary of bad impression towards the school and Br. Philip. They will surely suffer in future for whatever they have done. For everything either good or bad there is one Person to Judge and very soon will find the result. We are there with Br. Philip to fight for Justice

The incidence shows a complete lack of respect for human person and human rights of the individuals enshrined in the sacred constitution of India. No one has the right to take law into one's own hands.

The incidence clearly shows that it is a preplanned attack on a hapless Indian citizen. It is unfortunate that the police who is supposed to protect the innocent citizens failed in his duty. The media and police played a partisan role taking the side of the aggressor instead of helping out the victim of human right abuse.
I do not think it is a religious issue. It is just an economic issue. Religion is always used as a tool to divide people to intimidate the minority and the weaker sections of society which always happens during communal violence.
99.99% of our of our brethren are tolerant and well meaning like the example of Sheela Putthur. We must separate those goonda elements who cause disturbance in society. They must be arrested, tried in the court of law and punished. Unless this happens we cannot be living in a civilized society in the 21st century. The world looks at us barbaric if we do not punish the guilty who commit such heinous crimes against humanity.
We need to raise our voices against such inhuman treatment given to the citizens of India. We must condemn such acts and bring the guilty to justice. Then only we can proudly say mera bharat mahan.
My deepfelt condolences to Br Philip and his family who went through the most agonizing moments of their lives

My dear friends, brothers and sisters,
It's very shocking and shameful to Our India which accepts and respects every citizen as he/she is irrespective of caste/class/ color/religion/language/political identity/whatever may be...and we recite the pledge from the first std. onwards that "India is my country all Indians are my brothers and sisters,..." yet, there are selfish, greedy, wicked and violent people who try their best to divide the people and make their life miserable...So in this above metioned case as well as all the attacks against tribals, dalits, poor, women, children, marginalized and minorities should be brought before the Court and the criminals should be punished.Let us not take the law in our hands but allow the Court to do its duty.Let us not forget that a good Hindu/Muslim/ Christian/Sikh/Buddhist/Tribal/Dalit/etc. will be a good citizen of our country because no Religion teaches hatred and violence.
So my dear Friends, Brothers and Sisters let us stand together and raise our voice for JUSTICE & TRUTH..."Asathoma Sad Gamaya...
    Thamasoma Jyothir Gamaya...
Mruthyoma Amrutham Gamaya..." Let all the earth be filled with peace...JAI HIND...

This is unbelievable. I mean of all the guys they had to target Br.Philip. I am an alumni of St. Joseph's college and have known Br.Philip for quite some time and I can vouch for his clean record and decent behaviour even towards the girl students. I mean all this is just an act of hooligans who want to take the law into their own hands, as they have nothing better to do. The most shocking part I find is that the ppl who have the power to safeguard the law themselves are braking it, the inspector of whitefield police station has clearly misused his powers. Isn't there anyone from the governing body to look into this matter. We keep reading in the newspapers about India shining and becoming a global power and such incidents just prove it to us that the majority of us haven't yet grown up.
If the girls really had any issues with the behaviour of Br.Philip, this should have been brought to the notice of the school authorities and the appropriate action taken and this was clearly not the right way to handle such situation.
I just hope Br.Philip gets well soon. Our prayers are always with him.

It is really unfortunate and sad to hear about this incident which is nothing but a show of extreme barbarism and use of political power. The facts simply prove that this attack on Br. Philip was completely pre-planned and is a ploy used by Mr. Reddy and his goons to gain cheap publicity. If this same incident had occured with a person from any other community, the whole country would be protesting by now. It is sad that we are not doing enough to support Br. Philip.

When it is simply clear what the reason for this attack is, shouldnt we all get together and protest and see that the truth is brought out and made known to public. Mr. Reddy, the police and everyone else involved in this definetly owe a public apology to Br. Philip. Br. Philip, we are with u in this fight against injustice and pray for your speedy recovery. The open truth is greedy business minded people try to close the school for their own gain. The schools run by Brothers, Nuns and Priests are best in the country and attracted by majority. What right these people have to close the school run by others in a democratic secular country.

some people really happy of this attack and prove that very good. Br.Philip is a educator and assualting a teaher is as good as your father and mother at home. Protect your dearland and stop attacking humans who help your humna brother and sister to give them good educations. do you need to educate like Pakistan madrasa ways to your kids and make hindustan in to talibantan or give good quality education to reach your kids to a level in a democratice ways. Br.Philip has nothing to loose in his life except pain of this attack for some time. Guys you hate and attack Christian s will not be tolerated and will be ppunished either with diseas, curse on you and your future generation. This is amazing .... Mr. Phillip is assaulted by a Mob and people start bringing religious tones into the whole incident. This incident is the case of Vigilante justice which is religiously blind.

    2) Reading through the entire incident one more attribute I can add to the whole incident is may be economic motive of the parents running another school. But nowhere I get a hint the assault took place because Mr. Phillip was a christian.

    3) Another phenomenon I see is that, anywhere in Karnataka a rat farts and some people start blaming BJP RSS blah blah... If people have been to Bangalore they can find these Vedikes, Manch and other sena in every other gully NO WAY related to either BJP or RSS. But still blame RSS or BJP. Fantastic leap of imagination

Mode of operandi has shifted from attacking the dead churches to the living churches.
Somebody has to take notice of these serious changes and their striking mass strategy.
It is a melancholy situation , it is a dilemma that our own citizens are strangers in our own land, prone to regular attack in a secular country.
I believe such false allegations, cruel public mockery no misguided Hindus might have faced in a Christian country nor any Hindus might have faced in Pakistan with false allegations only to strike in public in collaboration with the media.
Simple truth is that Living God also awaiting to strike any culprits and help the innocent, whose hand is not too short to help Holy cross Br. Philip.
Beauty of Christianity is that Br. Philip has forgiven his lame betrayers.

Any organisation cant take the law into their own hands. Whats happening in Karnataka is not at all acceptable in a civilised and cultured society. The law and order machinery has broken down and only the minorities are attacked and butchered. Our state is heading towards anarchy and chaos. If not stopped, I am sure, there shall be many more such incidents. Goons have been let free and the state administration is dumb on these incidents. There is no peace in BJP rule. In Bengaluru the local Kannadigas feel that their opportunities are taken by others. They are looking for a leader who can safeguard them in running their business. Kannada Rakshana Vedike is one such organization working for localites.
But in the guise of Kannada, many are looting money by means of harassing and even manhandling. JayaKarnataka is one such run by an underworld don Muthappa Rai. Rowdies, real estate agents & money lenders are its members. They even take haftas from schools, PG accommodations, restaurants and bars for assured protection.
Added to this the Land Mafia is another evil in Marathahalli and Whitefield area. Much of the government land and poor man’s land is grabbed by the local reddys and politicians. (like Ex. Mins Krishnappa & Ashwatha Narayana Reddy and present MLA Varthur Prakash). Though I don’t know much of this bro. Philip (media have coloured him of misbehaving with the girl students) I can sense the land mafia subtle acting upon.
Recently a few white men had come to nearby Ryan International School for the dialogue on IGCSE system. In leisure they played with the children, listened to their singing and spoke of their culture and other feelings. On hearing this, one Pramod Reddy, a BJP activist rushed and shouted at the school management alleging forced conversions. Since other parents did not join their hands, his plan of getting cheap popularity was foiled. Unfortunately the said RI school is now in the clutches of Jayakarnataka.

Nagesha, your politicians can go to any extent to harm innocents by using immoral and corrupt ways. You people do not have any ethics and follow the jungle rule. In order to avoid competition the father(reddy) by making his daughter a scape goat has preplanned alongwith bjp, media, police and goons this attack otherwise the reddy could have very well first gone to the police station and lodged an FIR before resorting to this immoral act. THIS GROSS VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS ESPECIALLY ON A SMALL PEACEFUL COMMUNITY.

Br Philip is a kind hearted person who has devoted his life for the upliftment of the poor and the needy. Instead of extending a helping hand to Br Philip, these corrupt police officials want to make the matters difficult to operate. Is the world adapting a creative crooked way of doing crime by inviting the media? Isnt this the very clear indicator to a well planned assault is rather far from truth. What a cheap way of getting publicity?
why are people doing crimes these days for publicity sake? has crime lost its due punishment? Is the judiatiary watching silently the way people take law into their hands. Can students ot student groups do stride this way at any cost. Dont they know the right mens to teaching justice. this is the result of over confidence and misunderstanding of the meaning of Democracy. Democracy is not the right to do whatever one wants. it is rather doing what is rightful in a just manner, for the betterment of the nation, town or place.
Shame on these uncivilised citizens. Some one must draw a line to stop this kind of violence.

Nowadays LIE CAN BE MADE TRUTH because of some God fathers in political power as well as in Police level. It is unfortunate, things are taking place in our Mangalore, Bangalore, and else part of our Karnataka state. There are so many private schools and colleages are running in the state and in our country as a business and not for the benefit of the student or neither of country. Those who dedicate their life in to the profession, is the obstruction to the business men and so they creat the unrest in the society. When our Government itself is corrupt and unstable such things bound to happen and much more than this. It is a mere shame on us people, still we are acting like blind, though we can see clearly what is happening arround us and we choose the same corrupt people to the power. We have such a great number of youth to come forward into the politics but our children are hesitating to come forward, because they do not want to be near the dirtiest game. But in due course of time,The same youth can set right the things into cleanliness.Tell you the facts many of the private schools. colleages hospitals are become commercialized.Today honesty has no place in our siciety.Under Every business they hire and keep ready the goondas to takle the incidents and actal culprits are hiding behind the screen.Earler time Our Karnatake state was so peacefull and calm, but today the business, religion and the politics are blended and results which we can see clearly on the face book. First was RSS,VHP, Bajrang dal now Rama sena and Jaya Karnataka, and what so on.All such units should be banned

    • The attack on Br Philip is not a ‘one off ‘affair. It is part of a systematic long term project of the fascist, who have an insidious, divisive agenda based on fascist ideology.During these attacks the fascists have effectively used age old tactics like hit and run, divide and rule, diverting from the real issue. It is blatantly obvious that they have trapped us in their subterfuge. We have fallen prey to their evil designs.during this times we need to come together and remain united in the face of crisis. The dharnas and demonstrations by the Catholics needs to prove that satyagraha given to us by Gandhi is a very effective weapon to counter hate, prejudice and violence in this country. On the very first day some “terrorists”have taken responsibility for the attacks. This would not have been possible if they did not have the full patronage of the state government and the support of BJP high-ups. These fascist’s organization are out to destroy the secular fabric of the country. They do not represent the vast majority of parents or students of the school. It is dangerous and absolutely immoral to enter into any negotiations or deals with them. When one does so one provides them a legitimacy which they desperately hanker for. One is manipulated into a vulnerable position carefully designed by them.ie you are also criminal like us. Above all it is a tremendous letdown to the wider community that looks up to us to take a stand which is base on truth and justice. The question is not whether br Philip has misbehaved with girls (which we know that its false allegation used by these “terrorist”. the question is who gave them the authority to take law in hand?if we do not come together to raise our voice against these blatant human violations then we are promoting such heinous crimes be remaining as mute spectators...If you still value human rights ...get up from your slumber...raise up...stand up for justice..

Blessed are you Bro, for the scriptures are fullfiled in you,
I know you personally, and we are with you always,
    1 Peter 4:12-16
says "do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

There is a lot of jealousy and legpulling. This is a lesson for us. We have to change our attitude. Christians should start living like gujjus and jains who help their own community and prosper. But, that doesnot mean the poor should be neglected, they should be referred to the rss, bjp, bajrang dal, rama sene and others from their own community. However, christian children are prospering in all spheres and are mostly Post Graduates and above. Again during matrimony they get married outside the community. We have to get our children closer to the church.

These Reddys are trying to control Karnataka. The girls' father is running a school, but, the girl was studying in Holy Cross School. Two things are evident from this. First, her father himself knew the quality education offered by Holy Cross School. Second, father and daughter pre-planned this attack in order to damage the reputation of Holy Cross School.

These cowards do not have guts to fight singly. They gather in dozens and attack a single perons who is harmless. In some cases they carry out their cowardly acts in the darkness. Mr. Sudarshan Ganjimatt, if all of our people go to Canada, Australia, UK etc. who is there to educate and teach your people to live like human beings ? It is because of our Institutions you people live in modern age, else, you would have been stone age people even today.

Very sad to see such things are happening in our state.
More worse is that the educated people of our state are supporting such things saying that people have taught a lesson. If people have to teach a lesson to all who do wrong why do we need Police, army, government and judiciary.? Of course if some one is found guilty then law of the land will do what is right. I think when people write comments supporting the acts of people taking law in to their hands should be prudent in commenting.

I was apalled reading the comments that have already come up on this topic. first and foremost the news item did not suggest any religious or communal element in this issue. Secondly, no one is guilty till proven. i am saying this for both parties involved in this matter. we catholics these days have found an easy way of blaming the government of commucal elements for anything and everything. Lydia, why drag the church into this??? guys grow up. If we wanted someone to protect our rights then we shoudl have stoof united and elected someone who we beleived would actually stand up for us. When we have not done that let us noy point fingers at anyone!!!. if you want to be be heard do not use the commenst board. go out of your offices or homes and make a worthwhile contribution else its better to be quiet and not rake up unwanted tensions and passion.

What is wrong with our beloved country - which Pope Paul VI called 'a country that has sought God with a relentless desire"? It is now a country where the guardians of the law are the main violators of the law!

This inhuman act needs to be condemned by all people who have a head above their shoulders. Shame on you media men present while the thugs were beating up the Brother. Without making a minimum effort to know the Truth the media was taking pictures and videos in order to sell them and make some quick bucks. You media men present at on the spot, should hang your heads in shame. If you do not have the humanity to rescue a person from getting beaten up for no rhyme or reason, you have no right to be called journalists or media men.
And the police inspector...who should have brought the situation to control, became a party to the crime.
Sad to see this state, which once upon a time was known as 'Peaceful' one, has turned out to be a 'goondaraj'- immoral politicians are sold for crores, peace keeper police are acting worse than uncivilised thugs and media men to lapdogs who wait for crumbs that fall down from the tables of politicians...Sorry, Br.Philip, what else can you expect from such people....??? If u run a school, u r accused of molesting children, if u go into social work, u r accused of converting people to your religion through allurements, if u teach people to pray, you are accused of imposing your faith on others and converting them....So sad for you Br.Philip.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of the assault on Bro. Philip. I know Bro. Philip well. He is an upright and well-integrated person. He is also an excellent administrator who blends both firmness and kindness (particularly while dealing with students). Attack on an innocent person like Bro. Philip clearly indicates that today we are governed by jungle Raj where goons and criminals rule the roost. While strongly condemning this attack, I pray for my country and especially for Karnataka in the words of Rabindranath Tagore:
WHERE the mind is without fear and the head is held high
    Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
    By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
    Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
