Petrol, diesel prices rise again, burn bigger holes in consumers' pockets

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS): Petrol and diesel price rose again on Friday taking its retail rates to record high levels across the country affecting consumers this festive season.

Accordingly, in the national capital, petrol and diesel prices increased by 35 paisa per litre to Rs 105.14 per litre and Rs 93.87 per litre, respectively.

In India's financial capital of Mumbai, petrol became costlier by 34 paisa per litre to Rs 111.09 a litre on Friday, the highest across all the four metro cities. Diesel also costs Rs 101.77 for one litre in Mumbai.

The price hike on Friday is for a second consecutive day after the rates remained static on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Diesel prices now have increased on 17 out of the last 21 days taking up its retail price by Rs 5.25 per litre in Delhi.

With diesel price rising sharply, the fuel is now available at over Rs 100 a litre in several parts of the country. This dubious distinction was earlier available to petrol that had crossed Rs 100 a litre mark across the country a few months earlier.

Petrol prices had maintained stability since September 5 but oil companies finally raised its pump prices last week and this week given a spurt in the product prices lately. Petrol prices have also risen on 14 of the previous 17 days taking up its pump price by Rs 3.95 per litre.

OMCs had preferred to maintain their watch prices on global oil situation before making any revision in prices. This is the reason why petrol prices were not revised for last three weeks. But extreme volatility in global oil price movement has now pushed OMCs to effect the increase.

Crude price has been on a surge rising over three year high level of over $84.5 a barrel now. Since September 5 when both petrol and diesel prices were revised, the price of petrol and diesel in the international market is higher by around $9-10 per barrel as compared to average prices during August.

When a country like India has to depend for much of its needs on foreign supplies, it is inevitable it has to pay foreign prices which are world-based in hard currency. The profit makers are the oil companies and goods become very expensive, including driving cars is beyond reach of an ordinary person. Serious efforts should be made to explore other fuel alternatives, such as electric driven cars, running factories on coal or by solar power, etc. The ones who go all the way to the bank are national governments whose coffers through Excise and GST/HST overloaded with weight. Hope part of this excess wealth is passed on to the poor. Cities should encourage cycling to work, or if the workplace is nearby, walking. Dedicated bicycle lanes should be provided so that there is no carnage on the streets. My traffic warden is gone, and hope there are others who are taking on his role. Hand looms should be encourage and supported to spin cloth and made into clothing. These are a few suggestions to consumers and industries.

People, We need battery Operated Scooters, Cars, Trucks and buses to avoid this bad situation.... They are still in nascent stage even in US.... 2021 -2022 will be watershed years folks for Electric Vehicles. ....within few years they are likely to be permanently shifted to Nitrogen fueled Vehicles.... Battery operated Vehicle phase perhaps will last for a decade... I believe like flame before going off...burns brightly....we are in that stage now about Crude Oil / Hydrocarbons.... Both Central and State Governments could give immediate relief to people by temporarily reducing taxes...we all know Indian Government cannot reduce International Crude prices....so this is only option now.. Last option is to make our 'Daiji Sarwjnya' KBR....new Gas and Oil Minister... ...Tak...Takk...

Universal inflation. Even in oil exporting gulf countries petrol has increased by 40% in last 6-8 months. Some politicians try to appease people by offering cheap and pushing the country to bankruptcy and leave behind debt for our children. Eg: Our generation is paying for the oil bonds issued by UPA to appease voters. So a debt left behind by a generation 15 yrs back is being paid by us. Modi can also easily do it. Give it cheap and leave a big debt. Very easy for politics. But for Modi country comes first rather than vote appeasement. Hard decisions which only a able and strong willed leadership can take. Instead of blaming govt, its better that each one of us reduce our consumption by 10-20% so that we reduce our oil imports and also help towards a green planet which our future generations may never see in 2100.

Its was the fake claim by BJPs IT cell head Amit Malya who dpread rumours fuel prices Increased due to oil bonds issued by UPA. The fact checking source exposed Malviya's claim as untrue because the government has not paid any outstanding oil bonds since March 2015. Out of Rs 1.44 lakh crore bonds issued by the UPA government between 2005 and 2010, only two bonds totalling to Rs 3,500 crore matured during the NDA's regime in 2015. According to the government's budget document, under Annexure 6A to 6H, the next bond is scheduled to mature in byh the end of this month October 2021.

Time to get rid of this dependency on fuel from foreign nations who are bullish to other nations by stopping oil production to increase price. Fuel consumption has been drastically reduced throughout the world due to Covid lockdowns & due to deaths of scores of people around the world due to Covid, but I really don't understand why the prices are going up? Fuel producing nations are playing with price every other day. We should have gone for Electric Vehicles, electric mode of transport long back... Time to learn lessons from the current situation.
