Mangaluru, Oct 28: Vice chancellor (VC) of Mangalore University (MU), Prof P S Yadapadithaya, said that curriculum will be prepared for all the 61 degree courses under the university in tune with the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP).

Speaking at the academic council meeting at the university, he said that most of the educational institutions under the university have prepared proposals for the curriculum under the NEP. "The university has asked 48 educational institutions to prepare syllabus and submit proposals before November 6 in 61 subjects. If the submission is delayed, during the first two semesters, NEP curriculum as prepared by the state committee will be implemented. If curriculum on specific subjects is not prepared by the state committee, committee of experts will be formed to prepare the same, he stated.

"In the subject of history, the curriculum prepared by the state committee will be implemented for two semesters. The educational institutions are yet to submit their curriculum relating to French, Tulu, computer application, Arabic and visual arts," he said. The meeting decided to consider students who have studied the Bachelor of Vocation course for postgraduate programmes. Till now these students were not eligible to get admission into postgraduate programmes. The vice chancellor said that the University Grants Commission has clarified that this degree is equivalent to other degrees.

Prof Yadapadithaya also revealed that the university has planned to introduce open book examination system for selected departments from the current academic year on the model of Visvesvaraya Technological University. He explained that under this system, a lot of preparation will be needed to shape questions to students and questions which need analytical and critical answers, and these questions, as compared to traditional examinations, improve thinking skills of the students.

The vice chancellor said that the university has plans to start a five year integrated law postgraduate course at Chikka Aluvara, Kodagu district, for which the Bar Council has given in principle nod. Curriculum and set of rules are being prepared and in all probability they will be completed by January, he stated. He also added that a committee of experts will create curriculum relating to legal diploma and certificate courses.
