Azim Premji Pledges Rs 8,846 Cr to Improve Education in India

Bangalore: Azim Premji Pledges Rs 8,846 Cr to Improve Education in India

Bangalore, Dec 2 (TOI): In the largest act of philanthropy by an Indian, Wipro chairman Azim Premji will give about Rs 8,846 crore ($2 billion) to improve school education in India. Other donations to charitable institutions by any person or corporation in India pale in comparison to this massive endowment. It effectively silences critics who say Indian billionaires are measly donors compared to foreign counterparts, and that they focus on big-name western universities rather than addressing India's problems.

Premji, India's third richest man with a net worth of $18 billion, will transfer 213 million equity shares of Wipro Ltd, held by a few entities controlled by him, to the Azim Premji Trust. It will fund educational activities of the Azim Premji Foundation (APF) which works mainly with schools in rural India. He had previously transferred over Rs 700 crore to the APF.

Premji said more may come in future. ``I'm completely committed to supporting the larger ambition of creating the required social change.''

The money will be transferred to the trust by next Tuesday and Wipro's former strategy chief K R Lakshminarayana will be its chief endowment officer. A $2-billion endowment even at a conservative return of 8%-12% should generate annual returns of $160-250 million (Rs 750-1,150 crore), which will be used to run APF initiatives, including the Bangalore-based Azim Premji University.

``We believe that good education is crucial to building a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. We want to contribute significantly towards improvement of education in India, and through that towards building a better society,'' he said.

``All our efforts, including the university we are setting up, are focused on the under-privileged and disadvantaged sections of our society. Our experience of the past 10 years has motivated us to significantly scale up our initiatives, across multiple relevant dimensions.''

So far, the nine-year-old APF has worked extensively in six districts -- two in Uttarakhand, two in Rajasthan and two in Karnataka.

Dileep Ranjekar, co-CEO of APF called this the beginning of APF's second life. ``The current phase we're launching is based on 10 years of experience wherein we realized what needs to be done to scale this in a concrete manner.'' His co-CEO Anurag Behar said, ``The aim is to increase the deep focus to 50 more districts across India.''

Such a huge financial commitment has been made mainly because a university cannot be run without a large endowment. For example, if AP University were to follow the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) model which meets just 14%-15% of its costs from student fees, the AP University will need to meet 85% of costs from non-fee based resources.

``The foundation's significant increase in scale and its clear focus on social purposes will require a substantial long-term financial commitment, which is the purpose this endowment will serve,'' Premji said.

The university, offering post-graduate courses in education and development, will start with 200 students in 2011 and scale to 2,000 in 4-5 years.

The foundation will also create district-level institutions with 50-70 people in each and these state and district resource centres will support improvement in education, especially in disadvantaged areas.

The APF said it will continue to partner state governments (including continuing with its existing programmes), institutions, NGOs and individuals.

Will Others Follow Suit?

Will Premji inspire rich Indians to part with their wealth? That's a billion-dollar question but the American example may have the answer. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathway are persuading wealthy Americans to give at least 50% of their wealth to charity. They're even asking people to take a pledge they will do so, and with considerable success.

In India, the tech sector has led the way in giving away some of its wealth. All Infosys co-founders have charitable arms mainly in education but also in water management, health, etc.

Within a short period whole world is going to see fate of America as happened with Russia. It's not questioning others whether they are spending lavishly or not. its upto them. MR. DEVADAS: Good comment. Electricity bill of
    Ambani 70 Lakhs, then
    imagine the other expenses.

He became the richest person in India, let him blow the money as
he wanted. At the last day of the
short life on earth, when our life
on earth is displayed as a
short movie in front of us, then
there is no second chance to rectify the bygone life.

Those people who are born in
    affluence have a different mindset
towards wealth than the people who
were born at the bottom line. Majority of the poor will
    get greatly excited and totally
confused and have weird ideas to
display their ego to the world.

America had a few personalities like Howard
Hughes (he was the founder of
    TWA (Transworld Airlines) PanAM
and TWA were the largest airlines
in the 60s and 70s), who were
    driven in unrealistic passions to
    create the biggest of everything
    in this world.

The human nature is to worship
wealth, so some of the wealthy
people are naturallly driven to an
irrational mentality of " let the
world worship me with the unique
    material possessions I have"

Amabani grew in Bombay, and he is
familiar with the dark side of Bombay life of the people in slums.

If he showed atleast a small
compassion to the people of the
    slum by providing them with
    enough clean water, that would
have been a commendable act of
    charity.

    Hopefully, some of the richest
people in India may learn the
reality of life from one of their
    own Mr. Azim Premjni.

What a great sacrifice, politicians instead of sending money to swiss banks ,spend in this way,we Indians would have been one of the rich in the world in both literacy & wealth, where there is knowledge there is wealth!!Look at the greedy Ambanis, their first month Electricity bill is whopping 70lakhs,if they decide to spend half of that on providing shelter for the needy everymonth, they can save many families .As someone rightly pointed,Mr.Premji is an example,he is living an ordinary life, being a billionaire, thats how he knows what is charity,we wish all the business houses combindly set up an organisation to spend & manage the institutions & not let the government to involve in seeng these spent for the education of the people of India.Else not even 10% of it reaches the people, in any way.We pray god to bless Mr.Premji for his kindness, bless him with more wealth & good heart forever.

    The countrywise literacy rate in
    India of the minorities, as
    compared with the national average
    is as follows:

    Muslims 59.1
    Christians 80.3
    Sikhs 69.4
    Buddishts 72.4
    Others 47.00
    National average 64.84

This statement was made by the
    Minister of Minority affairs,
    Sri. Salman Khurshid.

    One gentleman in his comment
    made a sarcastic comment that
    the Christians lag behind in
    Education. Most probably,
he might have got his education
    in Christian institutions, and
    trying to berate the Christians

There are very few Indian Millionaires and Billionaires who come forward to share their wealth for the poor and under priviledged through charity unlike in North America. I salute the move by Azim Premji. In fact, I had the priviledge of working for Wipro and preparing a management report and submit it to Azim Premji directly every week. It is just co-incidental that I worked for the richest man in India as well as the richest man Bill Gates. Both are now well known for their charitable organizations.

Shyam Oberoi you are one among Nagesh Nayak mentality. See around Udupi. Most of the churches have an educational Institution and catholics donate in lakhs to run these institutions for quality education of all people irrespective of any religion. There are so many Temples in Udupi...do u have any educational instutions run by temples..There are so many Hindus who have studied in catholic schools but after getting employment they never contribute even 1 rupee to catholic schools. Christians even if they go to "Gadang" contribute something to educational institutions. But there are many people of your community who go to gadang and sleep in bustand and fall on the streets also..You give advise to such people and stop your rubbish comment.

This is a highly commendable charitable act. He could very well have built a private mansion for himself and for his family. The noble cause and the thousands that benefit from his generosity would send blessings on Premji's life. Also worth remembering that it's better to bring light and hope to the lives of many less fortunate Indians rather than waste money on religious celebrations and processions. I presume Premji could be the greatest single businessman Philanthropist in our soil as of now. This act of him, draws certain comparisons. Politicians open Swiss account and fill their bellies accumulating wealth further for five generations and not for charity. There is one millionaire in our country who want to become famous by giving gifts as flights to their wives on their birthdays and use to build the most expensive flats in the world, absolute waste of wealth. There is one accomplished business man has a multi storied record breaking residence building, a sign of richness to break the records for the records sake.

Further, some other pretty businessmen here and there, eager to seek name and fame, do host some cultural events. After the filling their pockets, share remaining few % in the high reverend places just to called by public as Philanthropist .

Criticisms are quite natural which are out-pour of the many. Wipro staff might also complain “ first put your house in order and later the public education system”. Irrespective of that I say, Well done Premji.

Mr.Azim premji has finally done it. If I am not mistaken, just before the common wealth games started this year in our country, he has come out with a strong suggestion for the central Government. Is it worth to spend 70,000 plus crores of rupees in our country for sports? Just a meagre 500 crore rupees could have utilized for the construction of basic schools in every district of our country especilly in poor states like Bihar & Jharkand.
Mr.Azim Premji as a civilized citizen of this country has shown his big heart for education and society.
We have rich businessmen Like TATA's and BIRLA's and MITTAL's & Of course the Ambanis!!!!!.... in the list of Richest Indians. and the list goes on and on...
Here is a man whom we have to salute for his deeds to the civil society. I wish and pray for his good health.

what an example is set by Mr.Premji. it puts to shame some of the wealthy Industrialists, Filmstars and even for that matter Cricketers, who though contribute a little in peanuts just to show to the public. Mr.Premji has shown how to contribute in such magnitude and for a cause like education.it is a good example to our politicians who rob people and amass their wealth in Swiss banks and deprive the needy. Politicians, now hear this great deed of Mr.Premji and change yourself. it is time for us all Indians to do all that we can to the needy and uplift our fellow brethren.I am glad to see finally an Indian Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.

Indeed he is GREAT (other meaning of AZIM) and inspiration to the other rich business tycoons like Ambani , Mittal, Ruvia, Birla, KPS etc. India is a great country and we should proud of our country that we are emerging super power soon. But unfortunately sad part is that even after more than 60 years of Independence India still has the world's largest number of poor people in a single country yet the matter of concern. Our corrupt politicians and their policies are to be blamed at most. By extending such hands through different channels (Top priority to education) from such personalities with fair accountability could help somehow though not completely but could least able to thwart the poverty.
