Mangaluru: Six arrested for selling ambergris worth Rs 3.48 cr

Mangaluru Feb 8: The Konaje police arrested six persons in connection with selling 3.480 kg ambergris worth Rs 3.48 crore on Tuesday, February 8.

The arrested have been identified as Prashanth (24), a resident of Kundapur, Sathyaraj (32) of Bengaluru, Rohit (27) of Thenkapadav,  Rajesh (37) of Adoor, Virupaksha (37) of Thenkayedapadav and Nagraj (31) resident of Kaup.

The ambergris was reportedly given by Sedhu Manikya, a fisherman hailing from Tamil Nadu.

    The Whale vomit is used in perfume industry. Now what I dont understand is that someone finds it in the ea or sea shore, sells it to others, what is illegal here ? can some knowledgeable soul explain ?

    In the Indian context, the sperm whales are a protected species under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act and possession or trade of any of its by-products, including Ambergris and its byproducts, is illegal under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

    sperm whale is a protected endangered animal. there is a chance that ambergris would have been obtained by killing the animal rather than being found in a natural way...
