Kundapur, Jan 5: A humanitarian act was witnessed in the city with the differences of caste system and religion notwithstanding at a time when communal flare ups are quite common.

Both Hindus and Muslims joined in the last rites of a Muslim man, Idinabba.

Shankar Devadiga and Preeta who were close to Idinabba were in tears, when his mortal remains were buried as per Islamic tradition at 9.00 pm on Monday January 3.

Iddinabba had arrived in the city about 25 years ago and his whereabouts before then are unknown. He took shelter in the fish market and was earning his livelihood by doing odd jobs.  Florist Preeta and a petty shopkeeper Shankar Devadiga were also running their trades in the locality.  Both Preeta and Shankar helped Iddinabba to erect a shelter in the vicinity of their shops, as he was honest and worked diligently.

Iddinabba always returned any money he borrowed. Iddinabba fell ill a few days ago and was found to have kidney complications.  The petty traders in the fish market admitted the ailing Iddinabba to Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore.  They enquired from Iddinabba about his family and he gave them contact numbers of his family members.  However, when the traders called up the people, they denied knowing Iddinabba.

Shankar Devadiga borrowed money from colleagues and managed to settle the medical expenses on his own, discharged Idinabba from hospital and brought him back to his dwelling.  However, Iddinabba once again fell seriously ill.  The neighbours in the fish market came forward to clean Iddinabba’s dwelling, provided him food, clothes, and cared for him.

Shankar then shifted the critically ailing Iddinabba to the Government Hospital where he passed away on December 26, 2010.  Shankar alleged that his pleas to the town council to come to the rescue of the ailing orphaned Iddinabba were in vain.

Iddinabba’s mortal remains were placed in the mortuary of Government Hospital for a week, in the hope that his family members will arrive to claim the body for burial as per Islamic rites.  When nobody came forward, Shankar was in a dilemma as to whether the mortal remains are to be cremated as per Hindu tradition or buried as per Islamic rites. At this juncture, Shankar informed veteran social worker Abbu Saheb and Muslim brethren of Mudugopady Jamat who took the lead in providing a burial for Iddinabba.

Hindus and Muslims joined in the last rites.  They collectively cleansed the mortal remains of Iddinabba, and some Hindus covered him in a saffron towel as per Hindu tradition.  When the mortal remains were lowered into the grave, the entire gathering was in tears as a last tribute to Iddinabba.

This is a place where politicians need to come and take a few lessons in secularism. After militancy forced Hindus to migrate from the Kashmir valley in the 1990s, Muslims have been acting as "priests" and "caretakers" of the ancient Mamalaka Temple on the outskirts of Pahalgam.

Not only has this 900-year-old Shiva temple with a two-foot
"shivaling" been preserved in its original form, Mohammad Abdullah
and Ghulam Hassan have ensured that all these years the temple did not go without "parshad" or "aarti" even for a single day. Besides the regular rituals, a daily prayer is held here in which the Muslim priests pray for the return of the Hindus, who had migrated.

Built on the right bank of the Lidder river by Raja Jai Suria
(1128-1155 AD), the 8 sq ft temple was a popular destination for everyone on a pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine. "We have guarded this place for the
Hindus. It is their "amanat". But now the situation has improved. We want that a Hindu priest should take over this holy place. Being Muslims, we tried to do whatever best we could to keep the temple functional, but it should ideally be run by a Hindu priest".

Further Abdullah and Hassan say their daily prayer includes a special mention to the Hindus when they say, "Lord, the heaven on earth is here in the valley. Please facilitate the return of our Hindu brothers from the hell outside".

Aaisa bi hota hai.. yeah hai mera India..earlier spreaded upto central asia/eritera/persia.

What a wonderful lesson for every one irrespective of caste and creed. I wish people learn a great lesson from this episode.

Iddinabha came to the place almost with nothing and people were not bothered about his religion or caste but went all out to help him. We must learn a great lesson from Shanker Devagigu. He was a hindu and Iddinabha a Muslim and that made no difference to the benefacter. All that he was concerend was to help the Muslim Neighbor. After the demise of Iddinabha people were anxious to give him a decent burial and at the instance of Abbu Sahib there were able to arrange a funeral.

Whereas people of means fight with one another and the feud between different religions goes on unabated, the poor people set themselves as role models. Let us learn a lesson from them and try and bury the hatchets and live as brothers and sisters.

It is good of Daijiworld to publish this account to serve as an example to people at large.

Zulkif, Bhatkal/Dubai, I appreciate your sincerity as well as greatfulness towards the Hindu community, and at the same time we all should be thankful to the Hindu family who had helped Zulkif when he was in need of Help. One thing is proved here that humanity or charity does not have any religion. It is those politicians who compel us to be separated from each other for their personal and selfish motives. Zulkif, you are lucky enough not to have a politician around at the accident site.
    Regards

More then a month ago i with my family and parents met with a huge accident near bhamawar between kundapur and Udupi on the highway when i was coming back to bhatkal from mangalore. there i had not found some people coming on auto and helping us knowing which religion i was belonging to. As I and my family was muslim we got a huge help from Hindus travelling on Auto. They arranged us to get to hospital and admitted us there with huge care. Thus they proved that if you are a real human and having Humanity in your heart then no body thinks of religion. and i really thank for their suuport at that time.

True humanity oversees every caste, religion and. The whole article about late Iddinabba and the heart touching gesture of Shankar Devadiga and Florist Preeta are commendable. Also the community as a whole when they came together leaving behind every bonding and giving Iddinabba a befitting burial is really a eye opener for the rest of the people who waste time in the name of religion caste etc.

Let us all leave behind every hindrance that stops us from being good human beings and look around us. There are so many Iddinabbas who are in desparate need for help. Let us learn fro Mr. Shankar Devadiga and Ms. Preeta and make this earth a better place for all of us...

Dont we have a free medical system for the poor, after 63 years of Independence. In that case, what is this talk of DEVOLOPMENT. We are still in the 18th century.
