Bengaluru, Feb 23: The state government plans to take strict legal steps against those who slaughter the cows, open illegal slaughterhouses, and indulge in beef trafficking besides stocking and transporting beef. Animal husbandry minister, Prabhu B Chauhan, informed that special task force committees in every district with the coming together of district deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, veterinary officers and members of animal welfare board have been envisaged.

Addressing the general body meeting of Karnataka Animal Welfare Board organized at the Vikasa Soudha here on Tuesday February 22, he said that the task force committees will be able to effectively stop cruelty against animals and put an end to illegal slaughter of animals in the state.

The minister stated that wherever the board has been named as the defendant in cases of cattle trafficking and stocking of beef, advocates have been hired in every such district. He also said that the deputy commissioners have been asked to reorganize the district level Prani Daya Sangh committees by taking steps to appoint new members. He said that work on providing district-wise cattle shelters is in progress and taking care of animals and animal welfare have been included in the syllabus to sensitise the students.

The minister who listened to the opinion that a person who was arrested for crushing a street dog under his car got released with a petty fine. The members strongly demanded to levy a fine of Rs 50,000 and two years’ imprisonment in such cases.

On this occasion, nominated members of Karnataka Animal Welfare Board were felicitated. Animal husbandry and fisheries department secretary Salma J Fahim, director of fisheries and animal husbandry department, as well as Manjunath Palegar, director of animal husbandry and veterinary services, and others were present.
