India issues helpline numbers for stranded nationals in Ukraine

Kiev/New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): India has asked its citizens stranded in Ukraine to reach out to the embassy for evacuation and also has issued helpline numbers. The announcement was made after Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday announced a military operation in Ukraine.

In an advisory to all the Indian nationals in Ukraine, the embassy said: "This is to inform all Indian nationals in Ukraine that since the Ukrainian airspace has been closed the schedule for special flights stands cancelled."

The embassy further stated that alternative arrangements were being made for evacuation of the Indian nationals.

The embassy will convey information as soon as such arrangements are finalised, so that the Indian nationals can relocate to the western part of the country, said an official.

"Please carry your passports and necessary documents on your person at all times. You are advised to follow Embassy website and social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) posts for updates on this regard."

The Embassy issued helpline numbers which are +38 0997300483, +38 0997300428, +38 0933980327, +38 0635917881 and +38 0935046170.

India had started planes to evacuate citizens living in Ukraine since the war-like situation emerged. A special flight landed in Delhi earlier carrying 182 Indians.

But, an Air India flight scheduled to evacuate on Thursday was forced to return to Delhi this morning after the eastern European country closed its airspace.

Over 20,000 Indian citizens are in Ukraine as the crisis with Russia escalated rapidly over the past week.

Now, the Indian government's immediate priority is to evacuate these people but the closure of Ukrainian airspace makes this a challenging proposition.

India had told the Security Council: "The situation is in danger of spiralling into a major crisis. If not handled carefully, it may undermine security."

It's sad really, that they are stranded and in difficulty. But if you watch the news on the ground and read the embassy notices, students were asked to leave earlier. Many stayed-put because airline tickets were high, others because they did not believe there would be war. Students were actually "chilling" and partying before the invasion. Whether to appear cool or reassure family, preparations for food water shelter and money should begin before time of panic. And with life and liberty at stake, money can be spent to return home when possible. Not when it too late. Still i hope they can be evacuated by road, the airspace is now dangerous. Student could've left when USA was calling its citizens back. Why wait? Well prepared is half won..

Neptune, Mangalore......in such situations who knows the ground reality better....!!!!???? Is it the Government or the common public...!!!???? Knowing the reality India could only bring back 182 people out 20000. Just asking nationals to come back will not solve the issue. Along with the directives action also must be taken.

I agree that the govt could be more proactive, faster. Atleast started the evac flights one week earlier. Students did say that a Rs23,000 ticket costed over Rs 80,000! If they had some way to get back I'm sure most would return. I don't know war but i've evac for hurricanes earthquakes and fires and yes the pandemic, from far countries. Its not easy. One needs a packed bag ready all the time. Or something that can be put together in 5 minutes tops. I hope our citizens reach back to safety. They are being brave for their family's sake.

It is just a eye wash. They have evacuated 182 of 20000 Indians (which is not even 1 %).......now since the airspace is closed they are planning alternative arrangements......May be bullock cart.
