'Not just to deny education for a piece of cloth': Udupi girl on Hijab ban

Bengaluru, Apr 20 (IANS): Almas A.H., a second PUC (Class 12) student from Udupi Girl's Pre-University College, one among the six girls who started a protest on hijab in Karnataka which went on to become a major crisis in the state, has said that it was not 'just to deny' education for a piece of cloth.

Her post, written on Tuesday, has again raised a debate on hijab in the state.

"Being Education Minister, is it just for you to deny education for a piece of cloth?" Almas has questioned Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on social media. She further stated that she had been preparing for her exams since long and all that would go in vain.

Almas underlined: "Don't do this injustice to us sir. Allow us."

However, the Karnataka government is all set to conduct the second PUC exams (Class 12) without allowing students to wear hijab. Karnataka High Court Special Bench has dismissed the petitions submitted by students, including Almas to permit hijab in classrooms.

Almas had earlier slammed the state government on its decision of not allowing hijab protesters to write exams. She had questioned Minister Nagesh, asking, "Tell me Nagesh sir, who made us miss our exams? I have missed my practical exams, your decision is not only gonna shatter my dreams but also I am starting to lose hope in the system. Where is the justice sir? Why do you want us to suffer?" she said.

The court has also stated that wearing of hijab is not an essential part of Islam. The Muslim organisations gave a bandh call for business establishments against the High Court order. Hindutva organisations later called for banning Muslim vendors from temples and religious fairs. The entire matter has taken a communal turn, resulting in unrest type situation in the state.

"I felt so disheartened after I heard the hijab verdict, felt as if my dignity, my identity was being snatched. I had least expected the judiciary to mock. I'm really at a loss of words right now. But, one thing I know is I'll continue to fight for my hijab, in spite of all hurdles to come," She had commented after the judgment on hijab by Karnataka High Court Special Bench.

Education Minister Nagesh has stated that not only students wearing hijab, but the staff, including invigilators clad in hijab won't be allowed inside the exam centers. Including Almas, the other students who started the agitation at Udupi Pre-University Girl's College have missed their practical exams insisting on hijab.

Muskan Khan, a student from Mandya PES College, who was praised by the Al-Qaeda global terrorist Ayman Al-Jawahiri for raising the slogan of 'Allahu Akbar' has also missed her exams due to the hijab verdict. However, the majority of students from the minority community have attended the recently concluded SSLC (Class 10) and practical exams of II PUC without hijab.

Karnataka government is all set to hold the II PUC examinations from April 22 to May 18 in the state. As many as 6,84,255 students have enrolled for the examinations.

I am of the opinion, Court & school could have given the permission to attend the school/college, upon condition of covering the head, by school uniform colour, cloth. Now being court has already given the verdict, students should not have sacrificed your career to a borrowed mind set. You students had your freedom and you have chosen it what has appealed to you.

Do not make mockery of the system. The judiciary has done its job properly. It wanted evidence to show that hijab is compulsory in Holy Quran. That proof was not provided by you. It means, this system has no religious background. You can wear hijab outside the education institute. Once you are in, you have to wear the uniform. It is as simple as that. You are spoiling your future by your adamant attitude. Do not blame the government or judiciary.

You are best judge for yourself whether you need to appear for the exam or stay with your piece of shield around your face. Invigilators have to see the faces and not the statues inside hall. You have a freedom to do outside.Your classmates must be knowing you by now .What harm they would to you during the examination atmosphere other than the subject matter. Please come out of this crap thoughts. You are way ahead of Afghanistan and other Islamic countries. God save you.Good luck

@ Cynthia, this is what those girls should understand (what you said) by themselves. Unfortunately they have created such a situation to make other countries believe that hijab has been banned in the entire country. Whatapp messages were circulated in neighbouring countries stating hijab and burkha are banned in India.

First we should know what a secular state is! You cannot force court orders to be happy and pleasing for all Indian citizens! If there wasn't any dispute, the case wouldn't have reached the court in the first place, thus its obvious that one party will not be happy with the judgement. It applies to all civil/ criminal cases in the court. & painting a picture who are not happy with the courts decision as anti nationals is nothing short of ignorance. And regarding eating up all the schemes, there are more than 200 million people who contribute to the nation.

Even this tweet looks like on purpose to disturb the 99.99% students minds and given to her to post by vested interests. If you were smart, you would have written the exam without the piece of cloth. Please understand there are more pros without piece of cloth then cons with piece of cloth. Also remember Congress has also escaped from this piece of cloth as there are no takers.
