Mangaluru, Apr 24: Thankanidiyoor government first grade college, Udupi etched a new record by bagging five ranks in the Mangaluru university convocation on Saturday, April 23. Out of them three students have secured first ranks and the remaining two have secured fifth and seventh ranks.
Deepika Nandikoor, the student of the postgraduate research centre in the college has secured two gold medals and a cash prize. She is the only daughter of Jayakumar and Lalita. While Jayakumar is a construction worker, Lalita ties beedies for a living. The college seat was obtained under reservation category.
The dream of securing B Ed did not materialize as the university results were delayed. Therefore, she has decided to work and support her parents.
History department student Belman Sacharipete resident Rakshita Poojary has bagged two gold medals and three cash prizes. Her parents Umesh Poojary and Lalita Poojary are daily wage workers. Her younger sister is a nursing student. As she is pursuing B Ed, she is dreaming of going for Ph D and reaching a high position.
Kannada department student in the college, Kundapur based Rajani has secured a gold medal and a cash prize. She grew up in the care of her mother from a young age. Though Meena, the mother is illiterate, her elder brother does centring work. She got financial support from her elder brother and two uncles and missed the rank by a close margin. She had worked hard this time for the rank. She has dreams to go for UPSC, IAS, KAS.
Shayin, resident of Katpady, Manipur who has secured rank in the journalism division is the daughter of vehicle driver Abdul Hameed and Khatija. She has received two gold medals and three cash prizes. Among her two elder sisters, one is a bank employee and the other is married and settled abroad. She wants to go for a PhD in journalism.
In the Mangaluru university, Christal Livia Mascarenhas, resident of Vittal Mangilapadav has bagged two gold medals. Her father Francis Mascarenhas is a retired teacher. Mother Florine D’ Souza is a teacher. Christal has a younger brother. She has received ninth rank in B Sc and intends to go for Ph D.
Puttur based Harshit Kumar, son of Sanjiva Poojary and Saraswati couple is a student of Mangalagangotri and bagged first rank in applied zoology. His father is a beedi contractor. Harshit is currently pursuing B Ed at Puttur Vivekananda college. He intends to go for B Ed and reach a higher position in science.
