Mangaluru, Apr 25: A possible tragedy was averted at Tannirbhavi beach on Sunday as five students of a college in Moodbidri, who were about to be drowned were rescued by surfing trainers Tejas Naik and accomplices, who were training other surfers nearby.

At around 8 am on Sunday, April 24, students were swimming in the sea near Fatima church on Tannirbhavi beach. As the waves were too high, they could not swim towards the shore. Immediately, national swimmers Sanket Bengre and Shilpa Bengre rescued two of the students.

However, other three were in danger. When they screamed for help, Tejas and other surfers brought them to shore on their surf board and gave them first aid.

Tejas is also trained as life guard. The effort of Tejas and others is lauded by all those who were present on the beach.

We Indians will never learn from mistakes. Heavy fine should be imposed. Thanks to surfers who rescued all.

Why the management/ governance of Tannirbhavi beach, has failed to put a appealing board, to visitors not to venture into swimming as this is a highly danger area. These 5 students have a very long life. Big salute to surfing trainers Tejas Naik and accomplices for saving these 5 students life.

Great job by mangalore surfers & swimmers. Proud to have such jewels in mangalore. Solution is simple- have more people learn to swim. It’s a life saving skill. You don’t issue license to those who can’t drive. Neither do you stop people from driving just because of one accident.

Time to put up boards stating if one drowns and is rescued, he has to pay minimum 10k fine.
